Vodafone revisits four decades of Christmas connections

Vodafone is returning to a festive campaign that resonated strongly with audiences last year, reaffirming the brand’s role in keeping the UK connected across generations. The film, created by Leo UK, revisits four decades of Christmas moments shaped by evolving mobile technology.

Since 1984, Vodafone has played a part in how people communicate during the holidays, from the first mobile call to the world’s first text message on 3 December 1992. The 2024 film was warmly received and became one of the most enjoyed and trusted Vodafone campaigns in recent years. Its return underscores the brand’s view that when a story connects, it is worth celebrating again.

A journey through festive communication

The TV ad traces the evolution of Christmas communication. It opens in the 1980s with a couple sharing a moment over an early mobile device. As the story moves through the 1990s, 2000s and into the 2020s, viewers see the family grow alongside shifts in technology and tradition, from flip phones to video calls.

Each vignette captures details of its era: discovering a flip phone for the first time, teaching older relatives how to use video chat and appreciating the comfort of hearing a familiar voice on Christmas Day. Across the decades, the desire to reach out to loved ones remains constant.

Soundtrack and campaign roll-out

Set to Only You by The Flying Pickets, the campaign highlights Vodafone’s role in supporting connections across every generation of mobile technology. Alongside the TV ad, which returns on 3 December, the campaign extends to radio, video on demand, YouTube and a social series featuring Roman Kemp and Shirlie Kemp.

Maria Koutsoudakis, chief brand officer, VodafoneThree: "As The Nation’s Network, we’re proud of the role we’ve played in helping people feel close, especially at this time of year, when our journey as a brand began with the first ever text. This campaign celebrates the moments that bring us together, and the technology that’s helped make them possible for more than four decades. The ad struck a powerful chord with audiences last year, reminding us that some stories don’t need retelling – they simply need to be shared again. By bringing it back, we’re honouring a nostalgic, heartfelt narrative we hope will bring joy once again to people across the UK."

Integrated activity across channels

The wider campaign launched on 14 November across TV, radio, YouTube, social media and video on demand, beginning with social content. The TV ad will air from 3 December, premiering during the Liverpool vs Sunderland Premier League match and followed by high-profile placements in the I’m a Celeb finale and Gogglebox.
