McDonald’s plots the tastiest heist of the century

McDonald’s plots the tastiest heist of the century

McDonald’s and Leo UK have unveiled World Menu Heist, a nationwide integrated campaign introducing a selection of McDonald’s most popular international menu items to UK restaurants for the first time.

The campaign taps into long-standing fan demand for global favourites unavailable in the UK. It invites audiences to join a playful mission to “steal” eight international items – including the Maple BBQ & Bacon Double Quarter Pounder, Garlic & Black Pepper McNuggets and the Pineapple McSpicy – and bring them to British menus.

A heist-style campaign unfolds in three acts

The World Menu Heist unfolds in three cinematic phases: Plan, Execute and Getaway. Activity runs across cinema, TV, video-on-demand, out-of-home, social, radio, digital audio and CRM.

From 1 October, McDonald’s began secretly recruiting fans through a bespoke Instagram “Close Friends” list, creating an insider network granted early access to the campaign. The operation culminated in a live tasting event at Barking Riverside Pier, attended by more than 1,000 guests, influencers and fans.

Anticipation built further through an editorial collaboration with LADbible, which released CCTV-style teasers showing mysterious cargo being moved under tight security—fueling speculation ahead of the campaign’s full reveal.

Fans become accomplices in the ‘Execute’ phase

The Execute phase, launching on 22 October, introduces the full heist story through a hero film that mirrors the tone of an action movie. The film follows a team executing a global food caper, featuring a delivery intercepted on a moving train and a McFlurry machine smuggled in by Jet Ski.

Social and digital channels extend the narrative through behind-the-scenes footage, influencer collaborations and real-time updates, transforming fans into virtual accomplices. In-restaurant digital touchpoints and CRM notifications keep the story alive as the new menu lands nationwide.

OOH and digital media drive nationwide excitement

Out-of-home executions echo the film’s energy, showcasing the new menu items with witty copy such as the Pineapple McSpicy displayed upside down in homage to its Australian origin, Japan’s Garlic & Black Pepper McNuggets “nugg-nabbed”, and the UAE’s Mac & Cheese Triangles “pocketed.”

The Getaway phase (17–25 November) will mark the campaign’s conclusion, with digital billboards counting down as the limited-time menu disappears.

Creative collaboration across multiple agencies

Creative was led by Leo UK, with OMD handling media planning and buying. Red Consultancy managed PR, events and influencer activations, TMW oversaw CRM, and Linney managed point-of-purchase communications.

Andrew Long, Executive Creative Director, Leo UK: “A successful heist requires meticulous planning and perfect execution — this one has both. Fans have been wanting to steal the global menu for years, and we finally gave them the tools to pull it off. ‘World Menu Heist’ is Ocean’s Eleven meets McDonald’s — the tastiest heist of the century.”

Ben Fox, Chief Marketing Officer, McDonald’s UK & Ireland: “Every great heist has a motive, and ours was simple – give people what they’ve been asking for. ‘World Menu Heist’ snatches eight favourites from around the world and enables fans from the UK and Ireland to try them without having to board a plane. There’s something for everyone, and it’s the kind of caper only McDonald’s could pull off.”

Running until 25 November, World Menu Heist positions McDonald’s as both playful and culturally attuned, giving UK fans a taste of the global favourites they’ve long envied.
