Ore-Ida claims frozen potato crown in new campaign

Ore-Ida, the inventor of Tater Tots, has introduced a new creative platform titled Ore-Ida or Nothing, reinforcing its positioning around quality and category leadership in frozen potatoes.

The platform is supported by a campaign featuring actor Keegan-Michael Key and developed with Rethink. It aims to highlight the brand’s long-standing role in shaping the frozen potato category through humour and character-driven storytelling.

Campaign centres on originality and imitation

The creative concept builds on Ore-Ida’s heritage as the inventor of Tater Tots, a product created in 1952 by the Grigg brothers using leftover potato cuts from French fry production. The brand positions this history as the foundation of its current identity as a leading frozen potato manufacturer.

The campaign film, titled imi-taters, uses exaggerated characters played by Keegan-Michael Key to represent imitations of the original product. The narrative contrasts these interpretations with the brand’s established products, reinforcing a message of originality in the category.

Claire Lukaszewski, Senior Brand Manager at Ore-Ida: "As the inventor of Tater Tots, we’ve spent decades setting the standard for what great potatoes should taste like. With ‘Ore-Ida or Nothing,’ we’re reminding consumers of something we can say with confidence: Ore-Ida out potatoes all other potatoes. There’s a difference you can taste - and it starts with the original."

Keegan-Michael Key, actor: "This campaign allowed me to do what I love most - dive in and create some really fun characters. And it all comes back to a pretty simple idea. Which is- that you can try to copy something great, but there’s always something just a little… off. That’s what made creating these ‘imi-taters’ so fun. They can come close, but are never as good as the original, which is exactly what makes Ore-Ida stand out."

Integrated rollout across channels

The campaign was previewed through a staged appearance at a New York Yankees game, where Keegan-Michael Key appeared alongside multiple lookalike characters to generate early audience engagement.

Developed in partnership with Rethink, the activation includes 12 creative executions and will run across television, digital and social platforms. It represents the brand’s largest marketing investment to date.

The work continues Ore-Ida’s focus on reinforcing product distinctiveness while using entertainment-led storytelling to reach wider audiences.
