McDonald’s turns happy meal into eye test
Developed with ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology institution Hospital CEMA, the campaign combines a playful screening experience with free eye checks for children in São Paulo.
McDonald’s Brazil has launched Happy View, an initiative that transforms the Happy Meal box into a tool for raising awareness of children’s eye health and identifying potential vision problems.
The initiative coincides with Brazil’s Children’s Month and National Reading Day on 12 October. Free screenings for children aged three to 13 are scheduled for 10, 11 and 12 October at a McDonald’s flagship restaurant in São Paulo, with examinations conducted by Hospital CEMA specialists.
Happy View Brings Eye Health Into Family Conversations
The campaign aims to encourage parents to pay closer attention to their children’s vision, particularly when conditions may go undetected during important developmental years.
Ilca Sierra, Chief Marketing Officer, McDonald’s Brazil: "Happy Meal is part of the childhood experience of millions of families. And to us, supporting childhood means helping children learn, discover, and unlock their full potential. Good vision is a key part of that. Around 20% of school-age children have a vision problem, and many cases go unnoticed by both children and their families. With Happy View, we want to use the reach and familiarity of one of our most iconic offerings to shine a light on the issue, encourage parents to pay attention to their children’s eye health from an early age, and bring the topic into family conversations."
The Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology estimates that around 20 percent of school-age children have some form of visual impairment. Conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, amblyopia and strabismus can affect learning, social interaction and school performance if they remain undetected.
Hospital CEMA Partnership Supports Early Screening
Hospital CEMA provides the medical expertise behind the initiative, helping bring vision screening into a familiar setting for families.
Dr. Sandro Ribeiro, ophthalmologist, Hospital CEMA: "Finding creative ways to bring health services to places frequented by families helps us reach the people who need this information most. Our partnership with McDonald’s gives us an incredible platform to remind families that caring for children’s vision is an essential way to show love, prevent problems, and protect their future."
Cesar Augusto Cunha, Market Relations Director at Hospital CEMA: "When two brands with a strong presence and reputation in their respective sectors come together around a shared purpose, the impact can go far beyond business. Happy View is a perfect example: by combining our brands’ reach, we’re bringing a message of prevention and care to places families already visit, thus creating an accessible, welcoming experience that makes healthcare part of everyday life. For Hospital CEMA, it’s also a way to reaffirm our commitment to making prevention an increasingly important part of people’s lives."
Happy Meal Box Becomes a Screening Tool
The special-edition Happy Meal packaging forms part of a technical kit developed with Hospital CEMA. It incorporates five sets of refractive lenses, ranging from +2 to −3 diopters, alongside a pinhole test, also known as a stenopeic aperture.
The experience has two stages. First, children look through the lenses built into the box at a specially designed poster based on the LEA visual acuity test. The activity is intended to help identify potential signs of refractive errors.
Children then undergo a fundus examination conducted by Hospital CEMA's ophthalmology team. This allows specialists to examine the retina and other eye structures, assess eye health and advise families on any necessary follow-up care.
GALERIA Develops Campaign With Creative Partners
The initiative has been in development for more than a year by GALERIA, the agency responsible for McDonald’s account in Brazil. The prototype was created collaboratively by GALERIA and creative hub Magic Lab, with guidance from Hospital CEMA and support from Sphera Comunicação e Reputação, which manages the hospital's brand strategy.
Rodrigo Marangoni, Executive Creative Director, GALERIA: "Happy View was born from the question of how we could leverage the familiarity of the Happy Meal to bring this topic into family conversations and raise awareness of an issue that may go unnoticed during a decisive stage of development."
Through Happy View, the partners aim to connect childhood, learning and preventive healthcare by using a familiar consumer experience to encourage families to seek greater awareness of children's vision and access appropriate eye care.
