Heineken tech innovation connects festival-goers
Heineken will introduce The Clinker, a tech-enabled festival experience, at this year’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. The innovation aims to connect fans through shared musical interests, turning a simple ‘cheers’ into a way to meet like-minded people.
Developed in collaboration with LePub Milan, LePub Amsterdam, and LePub New York via their tech collective LeGarage, The Clinker is a smart band that wraps around Heineken cans and glasses. The device syncs with fans’ streaming data to detect musical compatibility. When two cans touch, a light signals a match, allowing users to connect via social media.
Turning fleeting festival moments into connections
The Clinker is part of Heineken’s Fans Have More Friends platform, which unites the brand’s global sponsorships under the idea that shared passions turn strangers into friends. At Coachella, The Clinker brings this proposition to life through a tangible experience that encourages lasting interactions between music fans.
Research underpins the concept: 97 percent of global music fans believe music unites people, while 55 percent want to meet others with similar tastes at live events. Heineken also found that 77 percent of festival-goers have connected with someone during a live event, but most interactions are fleeting. The Clinker is designed to extend those connections beyond the moment.
Nabil Nasser, Global Head of Heineken: "The Clinker is the latest of Heineken’s unique innovations, designed to facilitate new connections around shared passions. It’s another proof point of our belief that fans have more friends, and with thousands of music fans coming together from across the globe, Coachella felt like the natural place to unveil it. The Clinker makes it easier to start a conversation, enabling music fans to turn a simple ‘cheers’ into a conversation starter and a new connection that can extend beyond the festival field."
Bruno Bertelli, Chief Executive Officer & Chief Creative Officer: "We aimed to build a new layer of connection, one where technology acts as a catalyst for bringing people together. A simple ‘cheers’ becomes a signal that two strangers already have something in common. Clinker turns that spark of recognition into real, genuine connection. That’s the promise of Fans Have More Friends."
Following its Coachella debut, The Clinker will roll out across Heineken’s global festival sponsorship portfolio throughout 2026.
