Toyota RAV4 upstages newlyweds in new ad
The campaign takes a restrained approach, relying on the central premise rather than exaggerated performances
Erich & Kallman has launched Just Married, a campaign for Gulf States Toyota promoting the 2026 Toyota RAV4 across five US states.
The campaign centers on a wedding where the attention shifts from the newlyweds to the RAV4, using humour to highlight the vehicle's popularity in the competitive SUV market.
Campaign uses understated comedy
Created by Erich & Kallman and directed by Ryan Ebner of ArtClass, the spot follows a couple leaving their wedding ceremony as guests become distracted by the arrival of the RAV4. The campaign takes a restrained approach, relying on the central premise rather than exaggerated performances.
Rikesh Lal, Executive Creative Director, Erich & Kallman: "In a crowded SUV category, a lot of advertising tries to compensate by pushing harder and louder. We took the opposite approach. The RAV4 doesn't need to announce itself as desirable because people already see it that way."
Ryan Ebner, director at ArtClass: "Comedy like this is simple, but not easy. It's about restraint. The premise does most of the work—a bride and groom getting upstaged by a RAV4 is funny on its face. The script and concept were airtight. The key was to cast a wedding party that we all recognize and sharpen the friction between them. So we sculpted those characters and kept the performances understated and real. Same instinct as the car—you don't have to oversell something that already works."
Campaign to run through 2027
According to Gulf States Toyota, the campaign is designed to reinforce the RAV4's reputation for reliability, quality and everyday usability.
Meghan Haslemann, Vice President of Marketing, Gulf States Toyota: "The RAV4 has always earned its place through reliability and everyday value, not hype. Now, with its sleek exterior, refined interior, and smarter tech, it looks as confident as it performs. This campaign captures that in a way that feels authentic. We're confident enough to let the car do the talking."
The campaign is running across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana through April 2027. Media includes linear television, connected TV platforms, cinema advertising and social media.
