McDonald’s digital campaign celebrates pickle lovers and haters
McDonald’s is launching Pickle It Forward, a digital activation turning pickle preference into a playful act of generosity, reflecting the growing cultural attention around pickles.
Across social media, pickle-flavored snacks, drinks, and recipes have gained popularity, highlighting a divide between fans and detractors. Research suggests this preference may be influenced by early-life flavour exposure and genetics affecting taste perception.
Staffan Ekstam, Nordic marketing director at McDonald’s: "Pickles have become a cultural moment in their own right. With Pickle It Forward, we wanted to embrace the humour, the passion and even the divide, and turn it into something positive. Whether you love pickles or remove them every time, there’s room for everyone at McDonald’s, and this idea celebrates exactly that."
Turning dislike into delight
The activation allows customers who remove pickles from an order in the McDonald’s app or kiosk to transfer them to a digital “pickle bank.” Pickle lovers can then draw from the bank to add up to four extra pickles to their order free of charge, turning individual preference into a shared, playful experience.
Tim Fremmich Andresen, creative director at NORD Copenhagen: "This idea is built on the simple truth that no topping sparks more emotion than a pickle. By tapping into the pickle debate that lit up social, and the playful rivalry between pickle lovers and haters, we turned a preference into a shared experience. Pickle It Forward proves that even in the strongest divide, generosity and humour can bring people together."
Activation and engagement
The campaign is live across social platforms including Meta, TikTok, and YouTube, where the pickle debate originally gained traction. McDonald’s channels and influencer partnerships on Instagram and TikTok, featuring both enthusiasts and sceptics, encourage fan participation. Real-time data will track pickle transfers and regional preferences. Exclusive campaign merchandise will also be available through social media raffles and in restaurants.
