KFC and IShowSpeed turn Hot Ranch into comedy
The campaign follows IShowSpeed as he interprets a conversation with a KFC executive literally and arrives at a ranch prepared for an entirely different assignment
KFC has teamed up with creator IShowSpeed on Hot Ranch, a campaign film that turns a misunderstanding over the phrase into a cinematic Western before revealing that the brief was actually about KFC’s Hot Ranch dipping sauce.
Produced by ISS Productions, directed by Daps, founding director of Sovereign Bloc, and finished by No Sushi, the film combines creator-led comedy with Western-style filmmaking. The campaign follows IShowSpeed as he interprets a conversation with a KFC executive literally and arrives at a ranch prepared for an entirely different assignment.
KFC builds a Western world around a misunderstanding
The film opens with IShowSpeed driving at night before a phone call sends him toward what he believes is a Hot Ranch. The story then shifts into a sun-drenched Western setting, where he arrives in cowboy attire and finds horses, denim, models, crew and the chaos of a commercial production.
Rather than treating the ranch as an obvious parody, Daps presents the setting with cinematic seriousness. The comedy comes from IShowSpeed’s complete commitment to the misunderstanding while everyone around him allows it to become a fully realised production.
Daps, founding director of Sovereign Bloc: "The projects I get most excited about always live somewhere between sincerity and absurdity. With this spot, the key was taking the world completely seriously. Speed is not the punchline. The misunderstanding is. If the ranch feels beautiful, cinematic and real, then the comedy has somewhere to fall from."
No Sushi shapes the film’s comedy and product reveal
When the actual product is revealed, the film moves from the ranch fantasy into an appetite-focused sequence featuring KFC buckets, tenders, wings and Hot Ranch sauce. The sauce becomes part of the story rather than a standalone product shot, leading to the film’s Hot Ranch Big Dip payoff.
No Sushi handled the post-production, with editor Eric Kissack, colorist Chadwick B. Williams and sound designer Thomas Jøren Nielsen working across the edit, color and sound. Kissack shaped the transition from the enclosed night-drive sequence to the ranch and then tightened the pace around the food and final reveal.
Eric Kissack, editor: "Comedy works when the setup is clear and the characters are well drawn, which is not always easy to do in a short piece. Luckily, Speed is bursting with such sincerity and enthusiasm that my job was just to get out of the way and let him shine. His character is so eager to perform and so eager to deliver something great that you can’t help but root for him. All I had to do was find the moments where I felt myself rooting for him the most."
Cinematic craft supports creator-led comedy
Williams’ color grade balances the darker tones of the opening car sequence with the warm, sunlit ranch setting. Nielsen’s sound design moves between the car, phone call, ranch environment and food sequences, helping connect the shifts in setting and tone.
The campaign also brings together the different disciplines behind the production. ISS Productions produced the film, while Daps and Sovereign Bloc provided the directing and creative approach, built around cinematic world-building and straight-faced absurdity.
Alexander Jamieson, founder and managing director, No Sushi: "This is exactly the kind of work No Sushi was built for. It is a brand film, a comedy piece, a creator-led project and a beautifully crafted piece of entertainment all at once. Daps created a world that is ridiculous but treated with real cinematic discipline, and the post had to protect that balance at every stage."
The film reflects the growing intersection between creators, advertising and entertainment production. Instead of placing IShowSpeed within a conventional product commercial, Hot Ranch builds its story around his personality and energy before making KFC’s sauce the destination of the narrative.
