Valley Bank debuts relationship-first brand campaign

Valley Bank has launched a large-scale brand platform designed to rebuild trust in banking by emphasising personal relationships and local expertise, positioning the regional lender as an alternative to impersonal, large financial institutions.

The campaign, titled That’s How, arrives as consumer trust in the financial sector continues to decline year over year. Valley Bank is seeking to differentiate itself by highlighting a relationship-first approach, centred on personalised guidance delivered by local teams across life stages and business needs.

Reframing modern banking relationships

Valley Bank describes itself as a relationship-first bank, focusing on hands-on support rather than transactional interactions. The strategy aims to counter perceptions associated with large, national banks, where scale can come at the expense of personal service.

Developed in partnership with creative agency of record Doner, That’s How marks Valley Bank’s first large-scale brand campaign and establishes a long-term platform as the bank approaches its centennial in 2027.

The platform is built around what Valley Bank and Doner describe as The Middle—a space where institutional scale and personalised service coexist. The work targets retail and general-market consumers alongside small business and commercial audiences, unifying these segments through a shared relationship-led narrative.

At the centre of the campaign is a 30-second film that follows individuals reflecting on everyday financial questions about family, space and security. A Valley Bank advisor responds by acknowledging these questions and offering guidance, reinforcing the brand’s promise to support customers through each decision point.

Everyday questions as a creative device

The broader creative system is structured around the everyday hows people ask themselves, from buying a home to growing a business or balancing short- and long-term financial priorities. The work positions Valley Bank as a partner with practical answers, regardless of the specific challenge.

Visually, the campaign adopts a bold graphic approach anchored by an oversized How and a prominent use of yellow, deliberately chosen to stand apart from the blues and greens that dominate the banking category.

Media rollout and activations

The campaign is live across streaming, television, out-of-home, search and social channels. Experiential activations support the launch, including train station takeovers and bus wraps around Valley Bank’s headquarters, with activity beginning in New Jersey and expanding into additional markets throughout 2026.

Collyn Gilbert, chief strategy and marketing officer at Valley Bank: "This work captures the balance that differentiates Valley from other banks: scale with a human connection. We combine the sophistication and capabilities of a large financial organisation with the ability to deliver tailored solutions through people who know your story, understand your goals and stay with you through every chapter of your journey. That’s How is our promise to meet customers where they are and help them move forward with clarity, confidence and purpose."

David DeMuth, chief executive officer of Doner: "This campaign captures the emotional truth of banking: behind every financial decision is a human story. That’s How is a distinctive and memorable way to bring those stories to life and highlight Valley Bank’s role in them, helping separate the brand in a crowded marketplace."
