Specsavers pokes fun at end-of-year rush with humorous ad
Optical retail chain Specsavers has launched a trade marketing campaign urging Australians to use their health fund benefits before annual limits reset on December 31. Developed with TBWA\Melbourne, the work leans into the brand’s familiar humour to stand out during the seasonal advertising rush.
The campaign centres on a playful interpretation of you snooze, you lose. It opens with the sound of a green alarm clock ringing as a man, unable to find his glasses, fumbles for the snooze button. In his confusion, he mistakes his partner’s hairstyle for the clock and taps her head instead — a moment that reinforces the brand’s signature line.
Campaign aims to cut through festive clutter
TBWA and Specsavers designed the work to disrupt the typical Christmas messaging by using everyday humour and clear reminders about health fund deadlines.
Stephanie Gwee, creative director, TBWA\Australia: “Inspired by the tongue-in-cheek phrase you snooze, you lose, where we landed creatively balances that playfulness with letting people know that life always goes a bit smoother when you don’t snooze the important stuff, like getting in early to avoid the rush at Specsavers to get your eyes tested and choose your new glasses.”
Samantha Ferreri, head of trade and activation marketing, Specsavers ANZ: “As the year wraps up, Australians are busy ticking off their to-do lists. Specsavers is here to make sure eye health doesn’t get overlooked in the rush. Snooze you lose achieves this by using our witty tone of voice.”
Data-led strategy supports omni-channel rollout
The integrated campaign runs from December 2 to December 31 across TV, radio, out-of-home, digital, social and in-store channels. EssenceMediacom oversaw media planning and buying.
Stefanie Crisafi, group client director, EssenceMediacom: “We know that many people tend to leave important tasks until the last minute, so our objective was to encourage customers to head into Specsavers early to get their eyes tested and choose their new glasses ahead of the end-of-year rush. We adopted a data-led, omni-channel approach to raise awareness of our motivating trade offer amongst those with private health insurance, whilst incorporating engaging formats to bring the You snooze, you lose message to life in a playful way.”
