Rebel reimagines Australia without its sporting heartbeat
In its latest campaign Town Without Sport, Rebel and creative agency The General Store imagine an Australia where no one ever plays, cheers or competes. The film paints a vision that feels both familiar and unsettling, highlighting how deeply sport shapes Australian life.
The campaign builds on Rebel’s Sport is Calling platform, evolving it from a rallying message into a more reflective exploration of the role sport plays in everyday communities. Set in the fictional town of Wattleford, the story unfolds in a place where fields are empty and grandstands silent — a reminder of how sport connects and defines us.
Reflecting on Australia’s sporting heartbeat
Rosemary Martin, GM marketing and eCommerce, Rebel: “For 40 years, Rebel has been part of Australia’s sporting story, helping Australians move, play and connect. We simply couldn’t imagine a life without sport. It brings us together, strengthens our bodies and minds, and builds resilience in our youth. Town Without Sport reminds us what’s at stake when that disappears, and just how much sport gives back to all of us. This campaign is a step change for Rebel, connecting storytelling with strategy, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve created.”
The power of absence in storytelling
For The General Store, the campaign examines the cultural significance of sport by removing it entirely. Sophie Lander, managing director at The General Store: “It’s part of everything; the clothes we wear, what we talk about, who we idolise and how we connect with friends and family. This campaign celebrates the transformative role sport plays to enrich our lives.”
Sharon Edmondston, executive creative director at The General Store: “We wanted people to feel the moment sport calls for the first time. That sense of wonder and energy that lives in our blood.”
Town Without Sport is rolling out nationally across TV, BVOD, social and outdoor channels.
