Nielsen expands content measurement across screens
The products are intended to measure total reach and audience engagement across an increasingly fragmented media environment.
Nielsen is developing a cross-platform content measurement suite designed to give studios, distributors, creators, rights holders and brands a unified view of programming performance across screens.
The suite is scheduled to begin rolling out in early 2027. Nielsen plans to combine direct first-party streaming integrations from publishers with its national panels and third-party big data to provide reach and time-spent measurements at scale.
Nielsen combines publisher data with audience measurement
The approach will connect publisher streaming data with Nielsen's existing measurement datasets. The company says this will expand coverage beyond what sample-based estimates can capture and give publishers an independent source for audience claims.
The products are also intended to create greater consistency in audience measurement across the media industry, allowing different participants in the content ecosystem to work from a broader set of viewing data.
Nielsen is planning cross-platform metadata integration alongside audience viewership data. The combination is designed to connect information about content with how and where audiences consume it.
AI interface to support cross-platform media analytics
The product suite will also feature a natural-language interface supported by artificial intelligence. Nielsen is developing the interface to make the measurement tools easier for clients to use when analyzing viewing and audience data.
The company plans to introduce the products following testing and a phased market rollout. The initial focus will be on establishing the underlying integrations and measurement capabilities across the fragmented content landscape.
Nielsen plans broader data coverage for content reports
The measurement system is eventually expected to inform Nielsen's broader reporting portfolio, including future versions of The Gauge. The reports could therefore incorporate data from the expanded cross-platform measurement framework as the products mature.
By combining direct streaming integrations with Nielsen panels and third-party datasets, the company aims to provide a more comprehensive view of how audiences consume content across television, streaming and other screens.
