Espolòn challenges premium tequila conventions

The platform centers on the belief that memorable experiences are defined by the people sharing them, rather than access to exclusive spaces

Espolòn Tequila is introducing Ride the Rooster, a global brand platform that positions premium tequila as a shared experience rather than an exclusive one, using the brand’s Mexican heritage and irreverent identity to challenge traditional status symbols.

The platform centers on the belief that memorable experiences are defined by the people sharing them, rather than access to exclusive spaces. It will launch first in the United States before expanding to Italy, Mexico, Canada and Australia.

Espolòn builds platform around inclusive premium

Andrea Sengara, Managing Director, House of Agave, Campari Group: "Too much of today's culture is built around exclusivity. Espolòn has always stood for something different: bringing people together. 'Ride the Rooster' is our belief that premium doesn't have to mean exclusive—it should be authentic, welcoming and full of character. That's the spirit behind our brand, and it's the spirit we're taking around the world."

The campaign brings Ramón the Rooster and Guadalupe the Calavera, characters featured on Espolòn’s illustrated bottles, into real-world settings. Their designs draw on the work of Mexican illustrator José Guadalupe Posada, whose artwork has influenced the brand’s visual identity.

Ramón and Guadalupe challenge status symbols

The characters feature across four hero stories designed to challenge conventions associated with premium experiences. The Members Lounge film depicts them turning an exclusive lounge into a more open gathering, while Tasting Notes takes aim at elaborate approaches to evaluating tequila.

The Velvet Rope focuses on exclusion at the entrance to an event, while The Private Cabana uses a closed-off beach setting to reinforce the idea that memorable moments are meant to be shared.

The campaign will run across advertising, social media, experiential activations, cultural partnerships, retail programmes and on-premise experiences.

Venables Bell + Partners develops global campaign

The strategic platform and creative campaign were developed with Venables Bell + Partners, with the agency translating Espolòn’s brand identity into a global communications platform.

Will McGinness, Partner and Chief Creative Officer, Venables Bell + Partners: "From our initial discussions, we knew Espolòn was a brand with the opportunity to blow up the conventions and cultural artifice of what 'premium' is supposed to be. What's exciting is that they have the bravery to actually take the brand there. 'Ride the Rooster' is bold, irreverent and completely uninterested in playing by the category's rules, and we couldn't be more thrilled to see that shared ambition come to life in work that feels so unmistakably Espolòn."

Espolòn traces its approach to founder Maestro Cirilo Oropeza, who created the tequila with the aim of making a product he could share with his community. The brand says Ride the Rooster builds on that positioning by placing Mexican artistry, rebellion and shared celebration at the center of its global communications.

Espolòn is available in 82 markets across the Americas, APAC, Europe and developing markets. The brand reports a 56 percent compound annual growth rate since its inception.
