E.ON highlights energy dependence with media blackouts

E.ON and BBDO Nordics have launched a campaign in Sweden that draws attention to the country’s reliance on uninterrupted energy by simulating what happens when power cuts out. The Ad Break uses disrupted media moments to remind audiences that energy is often unnoticed until it fails.

The campaign opens with a co-branded TV spot with food brand Zeta that begins as a standard commercial before abruptly cutting to black. After a brief pause, a message appears: If energy stops, Sweden stalls. The moment is designed to make viewers question whether their TV – or the electricity itself – has malfunctioned.

Highlighting Sweden’s Dependence on Energy

The creative approach extends beyond television. Radio spots fall silent mid-message, while print ads in major Swedish newspapers mimic incomplete pages and disrupted layouts as if the presses lost power. Each execution reinforces the same idea: the instant impact of even a brief interruption to the energy supply.

Karl Arildsson, Creative Director, BBDO Nordics: "It’s easy to take energy for granted – until it’s gone. In this case, we had to flip our thinking, aiming to maximize every channel through minimal use."

Cross-Channel Disruption

Developed by BBDO Nordics in collaboration with Mediaplus, the campaign spans TV, radio, print, and digital out-of-home across Sweden. By intentionally stripping back each medium, the work aims to spark reflection on how essential steady energy flow is to everyday life.
