PRCA launches charter to raise standards in public consultations
The Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) has launched the Consultation Charter for Public Consultations, aimed at enhancing the transparency, professionalism and inclusivity of public engagement across the UK’s planning and development landscape.
Developed as a flagship initiative, the Charter provides a structured framework for planning authorities, developers, consultants, and community groups to deliver meaningful and ethical consultations. It is intended to support growing demands for greater public involvement and accountability in local development decisions.
The Charter draws on PRCA’s own best practice guidelines, encouraging communications that are open, accessible and fair. Its adoption is designed to help stakeholders build trust, boost participation and ensure all community voices are acknowledged in the planning process.
Stephen Pomeroy, chair, PRCA working group and founder, Cavendish: “This Charter represents a significant step forward in promoting transparency, inclusivity, and accountability in planning consultations. It reflects the collective expertise and values of professionals across the public affairs and planning sectors, who came together to ensure that stakeholder engagement is meaningful, ethical, and effective. I am proud of the collaboration that made this possible and confident it will support better, more trusted decision-making across the UK’s planning landscape.”
Julian Seymour, chief executive, Cratus and working group member, PRCA: “The Charter is a welcome and much needed kitemark for quality in the community consultation industry and we have been delighted to be part of the PRCA team bringing it forward. We believe that the Charter will help our clients distinguish between providers by setting a positive baseline for the industry.”
The PRCA is encouraging all planning and community engagement stakeholders to review and adopt the Charter’s principles. The guide is available to download from the PRCA’s official channels.
