[Interview] Haider Rafique, Chief Marketing Officer, OKX
OKX is a global cryptocurrency exchange and trading platform that offers an array of services for digital asset trading. The company provides both retail and institutional clients with tools to buy, sell, and trade cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, among others.
Haider Rafique, the Chief Marketing Officer talked to Marketing Report about the company’s business model, its significant investments in sports sponsorships, including partnerships with Manchester City and McLaren Racing and the role of tech in marketing.
OKX has made significant investments in sports sponsorships, including partnerships with Manchester City and McLaren Racing. What role do these partnerships play in shaping OKX’s marketing strategy?
Our partnerships with brands like the recent Championship winning McLaren Racing team reflect a commitment to more than just visibility; they embody shared values like innovation, resilience, and a relentless drive for excellence.
These alliances help us establish a deeper connection with fans and demonstrate how OKX contributes beyond sponsorship. We invest in their future and the quest for success. We keep selecting teams that go on to become champions. The journey to McLaren's 2024 Constructors' World Championship underscores our ability to collaborate in a way that reflects OKX’s dedication to pushing boundaries in both racing and crypto.
You’ve been keen on targeting younger audiences, particularly Gen Z and Millennials. How do you see sports sponsorship as an effective tool for teaching these younger generations essential knowledge about crypto and digital assets?
We've noticed that sports like F1 and Football have a huge influx of new young people entering these sports for the first time. And the way these young folks are interacting with these sports is different to how young people previously engaged with them. They are digitally native and don't just watch sports. They interact with them, they have conversations, build mini-communities around digital content.
Through sports, we tap into passions that already resonate with younger audiences. Initiatives like the McLaren SENNA Campaign and Race Rewind digital collectibles transform crypto education into an interactive experience. By engaging them with digital artifacts tied to moments of triumph, like McLaren’s 2024 championship, we make the concept of digital ownership relatable, while fostering an understanding of blockchain’s broader potential.
How do you ensure that your sports sponsorships help build a "generational brand"? What does that concept mean for OKX, and why is it important in the current crypto landscape?
McLaren’s resurgence shows how investing in long-term vision creates sustainable success. By aligning with organizations like McLaren, whose heritage appeals to older fans while their innovation attracts younger ones, OKX positions itself as a reliable partner that grows with its community, crucial in a nascent yet fast-evolving industry like crypto.
We bet on teams when others weren't willing to bet on them. Because we saw something in them that others did not. When you're part of a comeback story you essentially embed yourself in the hearts and minds of people, because everyone around the world loves a great comeback story.
You can see that with the performance of Man City over the years. Look at the last match of the 2023 season when they came back from losing to score a last minute goal that won them the championship. Or most recently with McLaren winning the Constructors Championship for the first time since 1998.
See, when a brand is able to capture and utilize on these comeback stories and big moments, you inevitably become part of the generational stories, that then leads to one becoming a generational brand.
Why did OKX choose to invest in sports sponsorship rather than relying on a more traditional marketing mix? Can you elaborate on how sports sponsorship aligns with your long-term vision for the brand?
I've always felt that ads are cheap. We put relationships over transactions. We put character development over conversion. We want long term people to know what OKX stands for. And that is to innovate, to stay resilient, and to always do the right thing.
And for us to have a chance at letting the people know about our character, we need to choose more than just an ad strategy. We need to choose platforms, emotional platforms.
How does OKX’s strategic approach to marketing differ from others in the industry, and what role does responsible marketing play in restoring trust in crypto?
We have one principle, don't do what others are doing. Find our own unique path. So that our character is quite distinguishable among the crowd. There are more than 100 exchanges, more than ten top exchanges in the world.
Our principle is this, it's the principle of differentiating. It is really important. For example, you might see another company do an ad. For us, rather than doing an ad, we decided to do a short film called Mild Mild West, and chose a different form factor to tell our story. And the story of the industry.
In light of these challenges, how do you ensure that your marketing campaigns convey the value and potential of crypto while still addressing the risks that are inherent to the space?
Since the beginning of 2022, we embodied a tagline we feel passionate about, which is "to educate people to trade responsibly". And once when you take care of people, the value comes back. For us, it's more important to make sure people have a positive experience with crypto, and that requires us to remind them that these markets are high risk and investors tend to perform better than traders and to invest and trade responsibly. We provide a ton of tools for people to not get over their skis.
For example, when you come in as a new customer you can use demo trading to get a hang of things. You can use signal and bot trading to derisk your independent moves. Before you think you're ready to go on your own. And then we provide a lot of controls to derisk your positions and protect yourself from potential losses.
How is OKX leveraging AI and Web3 technologies in your marketing efforts to provide more personalized and immersive experiences for your target audience?
AI represents a huge opportunity for us to scale our content and content production. Secondly, we are exploring AI to render new ways of designing experiences. Take a look at OKX House for example.
An onchain retail platform which offers an immersive virtual shopping experience where customers can use crypto to purchase exclusive OKX and partner-branded items - from apparel to hardware wallets - each backed by a tradable NFT. It bridges physical and digital ownership, enabling our Wallet community to express their onchain identity in the physical world while maintaining true digital ownership.
Recent research shows that a large portion of Gen Z and Millennials are investing in alternative assets like crypto. How do you see this trend evolving, and how is OKX positioned to cater to this growing demand for digital assets, particularly in key markets like the Netherlands?
Investing in alternative assets like crypto is exactly why our latest campaign is called a "New Alternative", a new alternative to finance, a new alternative to investing, a new alternative to your current crypto status quo.
"A New Alternative" is more than a "Switch to OKX" brand campaign—it’s a movement. It signals a shift in how people engage with finance, digital assets, and decentralized technologies.
At its core, "A New Alternative" invites users to break free from outdated systems, traditional financial, closed ecosystems, and unreliable platforms. This campaign centers around offering more control, access, and certainty, promising a future without traditional limitations. By embracing decentralized solutions, we aim to empower individuals and businesses to shape their financial futures with confidence and freedom.
Looking ahead, what do you think is the most exciting trend in crypto marketing, and where do you see OKX playing a role in shaping the future of the industry?
Well, we are the trendsetters. We believe that the next frontier of crypto marketing is one that looks beyond just ads and transactions. It tells the story that crypto deserves. For the first time our industry, or any industry, has had a material impact on political outcomes. Crypto is now a primary narrative in the US financial markets and the political discussions.
This makes crypto deserve a storytelling platform that has never been seen before. Similar to one that resembles Nike, where Nike was able to convince the world to "Just Do It". We believe that the future of crypto marketing depends on the right narratives.
To inspire people, ignite a passion, build trust, and foster a sense of belonging within the global crypto community.
