Channel 4’s Creative Investment Fund acquires Firecrest Films

Channel 4 has taken a majority stake in Scottish production company Firecrest Films through its Creative Investment Fund, marking the first acquisition from the initiative launched in May 2025. The move is part of the broadcaster’s Fast Forward strategy to strengthen intellectual property ownership.

Glasgow-based Firecrest Films was founded by managing director Nicole Kleeman and creative director Iain Scollay, who will continue to lead the company. The production house previously received backing from Channel 4’s Indie Growth Fund in 2017.

Specialising in documentaries and factual content, Firecrest Films has collected 16 BAFTAs and industry awards including Best Small Indie of the Year at the Edinburgh Television Festival Awards in 2022 and Best Multi-Channel Production Company at the Broadcast Digital Awards in 2024.

The company has worked with broadcasters and streamers including BBC, Amazon and Channel 4. Its credits include Murder Trial, Paramedics on Scene, Three Mothers, Two Babies and a Scandal for Amazon, Michael Palin: Travels of A Lifetime for BBC Two and Dispatches: The Truth About Nike and Adidas for Channel 4. Firecrest also secured a six-project deal with Amazon Prime Video, featuring The Orkney Assassin and Chasing the Tinder Predator.

Based in Govan, Firecrest employs nearly 100 staff and freelancers and is recognised for developing new talent in the Scottish television industry. In the past three years, the company has given 25 people their first jobs in television and runs an award-winning training scheme that has supported more than 40 people to progress from entry level to senior positions.

Caroline Murphy, who has led Channel 4’s Indie Growth Fund since 2019, negotiated the investment. Firecrest was advised by Helion Partners and Lee & Thompson.

Nicole Kleeman, managing director, Firecrest Films: “We are incredibly proud of the hugely successful business and team we have built in Govan. Over the last eight years our partnership with Channel 4 has taken us from a small regional indie to one of the UK’s most significant documentary producers. This new relationship with Channel 4 will give us the security to futureproof the business and continue to grow talent and tell stories.”

Jonathan Allan, interim CEO, Channel 4: “We have supported Nicole and Iain in their outstanding Scottish indie with their high-quality and critically acclaimed factual content for the last eight years. So I’m delighted that Channel 4 is now able to develop this important relationship with Firecrest Films through the first acquisition from the Creative Investment Fund, supporting our new strategy to invest in and own IP.

“This strategy will enable us to diversify revenues and secure Channel 4’s long-term sustainability through generating new income streams that are not wholly reliant on the advertising market. In turn we can then invest more into the independent sector and British storytelling.”
