Amnesty and Cossette reunite ‘write for rights’ campaign

Amnesty International has partnered once again with Cossette to launch the twenty-fifth edition of Write for Rights, the annual campaign that mobilises people worldwide to support individuals unjustly detained or denied basic freedoms. As International Human Rights Day approaches, the initiative highlights how letter writing continues to drive real-world change.

Each year, thousands of participants write messages of solidarity to those imprisoned for defending their rights. Amnesty reports that more than 75 percent of supported cases lead to a release, reinforcing the campaign’s long-standing impact.

Campaign spotlights stories of those freed

This year’s creative approach focuses on people who regained their freedom through previous Write for Rights efforts. Cossette and Amnesty are sharing their stories using illustrated portraits made entirely from typewriter characters. Created by UK-based artist James Cook, the visuals integrate excerpts from letters that contributed to each person’s release.

Philippe Leblanc, art director, Cossette: “James’s work immediately spoke to us. The idea of reconstructing these real moments of liberation using the very words that made them possible beautifully captures the emotional force of writing.”

The campaign will run across Quebec from until mid-January, with placements in out of home, print and radio. Members of the public can take part in the Write for Rights Marathon by visiting the campaign website.
