Deliveroo to shut down Dutch operation

Deliveroo has announced it will shut down its Dutch operation at the end of November 2022. The UK-based company states that it always strives to operate in markets where there is a clear path to being a leader. Deliveroo gets the most value from markets where it holds the first or second position in the market. This is not the case in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands will contribute 1 percent to Deliveroo's turnover (defined as Gross Transaction Value) in the first half of 2022. To occupy a leading position, the company would have to invest heavily.

Eric French , Chief Operating Officer International, Deliveroo: "This is not a decision taken lightly. We would like to thank all our employees and riders who have supported us throughout this consultation process. They are our priority. We have enjoyed working with thousands of restaurants in the Netherlands and would like to thank the consumers who have ordered from us and enjoyed their meal. We appear to be operational during the coming months."

Deliveroo is a competitor of Thuisbezorgd and Uber Eats, but has also delivered for Albert Heijn since April 2022. In 2019, Deliveroo withdrew from Germany for similar reasons.
