PRCA pushes UK government for clearer lobbying rules

Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) has renewed its call for urgent reform of the UK’s lobbying transparency framework through its On the Record campaign.

The association is urging the UK Government to ensure all lobbying is properly regulated, documented, and publicly reported, highlighting that the current system captures only a small proportion of lobbying activity. The campaign promotes best practice and full transparency across the profession, with PRCA members required under its Code for Professional Lobbying to meet ethical standards and publish quarterly activity via the Public Affairs Register.

Engaging MPs on transparency

To launch On the Record, the PRCA will host a drop-in session for MPs at Portcullis House on 4 March, offering an opportunity to learn about the campaign and sign a pledge of support. The initiative follows discussions between PRCA CEO Sarah Waddington CBE, Head of Public Affairs Louise Whatham, and the newly formed Ethics and Integrity Commission on potential improvements to lobbying standards.

Louise Whatham, Head of Public Affairs, PRCA: "Lobbying plays a vital role in the democratic process and informs policy decisions that impact society, but transparency about who is lobbying is critical to public trust. The current framework only captures a fraction of activity. It is time for a comprehensive, fair and modern system that applies to everyone equally."

The PRCA continues to advocate for a system that strengthens accountability, safeguards public trust, and applies uniformly across all lobbying activities in the UK.
