YouTube view change could lift public views 30 percent
The change and aligns long-form and live video view counting with Shorts, where a view is recorded when playback begins
YouTube’s change to how it counts views on long-form and live videos could make public view counts approximately 30 percent higher than engaged views, according to research from Agentio based on 35,800 Creator videos published between June and July 2026.
The change and aligns long-form and live video view counting with Shorts, where a view is recorded when playback begins. YouTube’s analytics, audience retention metrics and Partner Program earnings will continue to use the renamed engaged views metric.
Public views and engaged views will diverge
Agentio used a 30-second engagement threshold as a directional proxy and estimated that public views could be 30 percent higher than engaged views. Using 25- and 20-second thresholds produced estimated gaps of 24 percent and 17 percent, respectively.
The projected increase varies by channel size. Agentio estimates a 32.4 percent increase for micro channels, compared with 28.1 percent for mid-sized channels and 26.6 percent for macro channels.
Shorts highlight the exposure gap
Shorts, which adopted first-frame view counting in 2025, illustrate the potential difference between exposure and attention. Across 550 organic Shorts included in Agentio’s dataset, reported views were 65 percent higher than engaged views.
Creator category also influenced the estimated gap. At the 30-second threshold, Technology and Fitness recorded the highest projected increase at 36.5 percent each, while Gaming had the lowest at 27.0 percent.
Brands face new measurement considerations
Arthur Leopold, Co-founder and CEO of Agentio: "YouTube's change gives the market a consistent exposure metric across formats, but exposure and attention are not interchangeable. Brands need to know which number sits behind every benchmark, rate card, and CPM conversation. Creator media should be priced and measured on the attention audiences actually give it—which is why Agentio has always anchored on engaged views."
The research said the change will effectively create two view records for each video. Public views will remain visible on YouTube’s watch pages, while engaged views will be available through YouTube Studio and permissioned channel-level reporting.
Agentio urges brands to reset benchmarks
Agentio said brands relying only on public view counts could face difficulties when comparing videos published before and after the change, as the figures will use different counting methods.
The company recommends that brands distinguish between views and engaged views in agreements and benchmarks and base pricing and performance measurement on engaged views. Creators are also advised to track engaged views in YouTube Studio and clarify the metric used during brand negotiations.
