WPP backs Ogilvy expansion into athlete-led marketing

Ogilvy has strengthened its Sports & Entertainment practice through a strategic investment by WPP in social-first sports agency Article 41, expanding its capabilities across creator marketing, athlete partnerships and fandom-led brand engagement.

The move is designed to help brands connect more directly with culture through athletes and creators, while extending Ogilvy’s reach across sport, entertainment and social platforms.

Leadership structure built around athlete-led marketing

As part of the partnership, Vickie Segar, co-founder of Article 41, has been appointed Global Chief Sports & Entertainment Officer. She will lead Ogilvy’s global practice focused on sports, entertainment and creator-led marketing.

Article 41 co-founder Ben Gildin will take on a senior strategic role, while Meredith Allen will serve as Ogilvy North America Influencer Lead, working across client programmes in the space.

Expansion into creator and athlete economy

The partnership strengthens Ogilvy’s positioning in athlete influence, sponsorship strategy and social-first content production. It also expands into emerging areas such as Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), where athletes monetise their personal brands through partnerships and digital platforms.

The agency will combine these capabilities with existing services spanning brand strategy, fan engagement, commerce and influencer marketing.

Global sports rights and brand partnerships

The expanded practice will work across major sporting properties including FIFA World Cup, the Olympics, Formula 1 and Major League Soccer, alongside global brands such as Coca-Cola, Dove, Powerade, KFC and Samsung.

Laurent Ezekiel, Global CEO, Ogilvy: "Sports and entertainment is one of the most important spaces for brands to build cultural relevance and connection with consumers. Article 41 is at the leading edge of where this space is going, with a progressive view of talent and creators, and native social production that captures attention and drives deep engagement. I’m thrilled to welcome the Article 41 team to bolster and expand our expertise and have Vickie leading the future of Ogilvy Sports & Entertainment."

Vickie Segar, Global Chief Sports & Entertainment Officer: "Bringing Article 41 into Ogilvy and WPP accelerates our vision for how sports, culture and creator-driven marketing converge. Ogilvy Sports & Entertainment is about helping brands and rights holders show up in culture in ways that fuel fandom. There is a huge opportunity to strengthen that capability where talent ecosystems intersect with global sports platforms, creating real value for athletes, rights holders, brands, and fans."

Liz Taylor, Global Chief Creative Officer, Ogilvy: "Athletes are at the heart of culture, shaping passions and bringing people together in ways nothing else can. Sport and fandom are one of the most powerful forces shaping culture right now, and one of the richest spaces we have for creativity. Vickie brings the vision, experience and cultural instinct to unlock that opportunity, with a deep understanding of athletes, sport and social-first storytelling. She’s the right leader for the next chapter of Ogilvy Sports & Entertainment."

Focus on fandom and commercial growth

Ogilvy’s Sports & Entertainment practice is built around what it describes as a fandom-first approach, aiming to convert audience passion into engagement and commercial outcomes for brands.

The expansion aligns with broader growth in the global sports industry, supported by major upcoming events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
