UAE and Saudi Arabia lead world in social media penetration

Social media use has moved from an abstract concern to a phenomenon that can be quantified. A global analysis by PlayersTime maps where social media engagement is most concentrated, showing how deeply platforms are embedded in daily routines across continents.

The report draws on long-term datasets covering internet and social media use from 2000 to 2026. Analysts reviewed average daily usage, total user numbers and social media penetration across 68 countries, while also examining differences by age, gender and platform activity.

Social media penetration exceeds population levels in some regions

The findings place Saudi Arabia at the top of the ranking, with 38.6 million social media accounts in a country of 34.7 million people. This equates to a penetration rate of 111 percent, the highest recorded in the study. The United Arab Emirates follows closely at 110 percent, while India, despite hosting around 500 million accounts, records a penetration rate of 34.1 percent.

PlayersTime attributes the exceptionally high figures in Saudi Arabia and the UAE partly to large expatriate populations. Foreign residents often maintain multiple social media accounts to stay connected with contacts abroad, even though they are not included in official population statistics.

Asia and Europe show contrasting patterns of engagement

Outside the Gulf region, Singapore and China rank among the most connected countries, with penetration rates of 90.6 percent and around 90.3 percent respectively. Libya also appears near the top at 89.6 percent, followed by Malaysia at 85 percent and Hong Kong at 84.4 percent.

In Europe, the Netherlands leads with 83.3 percent of the population represented by social media accounts. Spain, Switzerland, Sweden and Ireland also report penetration levels above 80 percent, indicating widespread adoption across different age groups and markets.

User numbers highlight the scale of global platforms

China holds the largest number of social media accounts worldwide, with approximately 1.28 billion active profiles. India ranks second with around 500 million, followed by the United States with about 254 million accounts, suggesting that roughly 73 percent of Americans use social media.

By the end of 2025, the total number of social media users globally reached an estimated 5.66 billion. Platforms operated by Meta continue to dominate at scale, with Facebook reporting 3.07 billion monthly active users, while Instagram and WhatsApp each approach 3 billion.

Social media engagement spans all age groups

Aleksandra Dimitrova, data analyst and author, PlayersTime: "Social media has become a reality even for the youngest users, offering tailored content and endless engagement for all ages. In this context, it is evident that nearly everyone with access not only enjoys but actively seeks and consumes content on these platforms. The steadily growing number of users illustrates the addictive nature of social media, highlighting how online connections continue to expand even as face-to-face interactions often diminish."
