Spotify and NMPA launch direct licensing portal for publishers

Spotify and the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) have introduced a new Opt-In Portal that allows NMPA members to enter direct license agreements for expanded audiovisual rights in the United States.

The collaboration aims to boost royalty payments for independent music publishers and songwriters, while enabling Spotify to develop video features that strengthen artist–fan engagement.

Under the agreement, independent publishers can opt in to a new revenue stream connected to Spotify’s growing audiovisual offerings. In return, Spotify gains the rights needed to integrate richer video experiences within its platform, reflecting the broader shift toward multimedia engagement in music streaming.

Partnership expands opportunities for independent publishers

Alex Norström, Co-President and Chief Business Officer, Spotify: “This new partnership with the NMPA will increase revenue for songwriters and independent publishers who are the heart of the industry. We look forward to continuing to work with the NMPA to create new value and opportunities for their members.”

David Israelite, President and CEO, NMPA: “We are pleased that this deal offers indie publishers the chance to enter into direct deals with Spotify in regard to audiovisual streaming functionality on the platform alongside the recently announced larger publishing companies. This new income stream reflects the growing value of songs as digital platforms offer new capabilities to consumers.”

Portal open through December 19 for eligible publishers

The NMPA Opt-In Portal will remain available to eligible publishers through December 19. The initiative marks another step in strengthening collaboration between digital streaming services and the music publishing community, ensuring songwriters and rights holders benefit from emerging formats and technologies.
