Nielsen rolls out big data + panel as new standard for TV ratings

With the start of the broadcast and football seasons this month, Nielsen has announced a series of updates as the industry formally adopts its enhanced Big Data + Panel methodology. The company is now the first accredited national TV audience measurement provider to integrate this approach, which it describes as the most accurate system to date.

Karthik Rao, CEO, Nielsen: “The embrace of Big Data + Panel ratings marks a once-in-a-generation enhancement for the industry. Combining the trusted, historical measurement of our Nielsen homes with millions of big data inputs gives us the most accurate numbers ever. We developed this measurement advancement in service of and in collaboration with our clients. We are proud to work with them to deliver these numbers for the new season.”

As part of the transition, Nielsen has updated its press policy effective September 1. Broadcasters, networks and streamers are now expected to base all press claims on Big Data + Panel. Because the data is typically available two to three days after a premiere, single-day events are exempted. For these cases, networks may cite next-day numbers, provided they are sourced as “Nielsen Preliminary Data.” Once the Big Data + Panel numbers are published, they will serve as the final figures for press reporting.

Nielsen is also refreshing its press website and client portal to reflect the new methodology. Beginning October 1, the company will publish weekly rankings derived from Big Data + Panel, covering broadcast programs, network averages, cable programming, syndication, sports events and total scheduled programming. The first set of rankings will coincide with the official start of the broadcast season on September 22, with data released the following week.

The scale of Nielsen’s measurement underscores the impact of Big Data + Panel. The company delivers more than 100 terabytes of data daily, tracking over a trillion minutes of viewing each month across streaming platforms. Its coverage extends to set-top boxes and smart TVs in 45 million households and 75 million devices, supported by a representative panel of 42,000 homes and 100,000 individuals—the largest of its kind in the U.S. Earlier this year, Nielsen expanded its Out of Home measurement nationwide and is in the process of adding 8,600 panelists to strengthen that dataset.

Nielsen continues to publish its signature reports, including The Gauge and Media Distributor Gauge each month, the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 weekly, and the Ad Supported Gauge quarterly. Together, these releases provide the industry with trusted insights into how audiences spend their time across broadcast, cable and streaming.

Big Data + Panel combines the strengths of Nielsen’s traditional panel methodology with massive datasets from cable and satellite set-top boxes, smart TVs and first-party streaming service partners. The result is a system that captures device-level TV viewing at scale, enabling more precise audience measurement for both live and on-demand programming. Beyond advertising, Nielsen says the innovation will support decision-making around content programming, licensing and distribution deals.

The launch of Big Data + Panel continues Nielsen’s push toward modernizing TV measurement. Alongside this rollout, the company has advanced out-of-home measurement and expanded its leadership in streaming metrics with products such as Streaming Content Ratings and Streaming Platform Ratings.
