[Marketing Week] Bob Koigi: Big tech tightens grip on social ads
Global digital advertising is increasingly being shaped by AI, with social media platforms strengthening their dominance as video, automation and targeting tools reshape how brands spend. Meta remains the key player, using its scale across Facebook and Instagram to lead global ad growth.
Meta is projected to earn $240 billion in advertising revenue in 2026, according to WARC Media, up 22.3% year on year, driven by AI-powered optimisation across its apps. Growth is expected to slow to 12.1% in 2027 after an estimated $196 billion in 2025.
The company’s model is increasingly powered by heavy investment in AI and automation, improving ad performance and efficiency. Facebook and Instagram account for about 60% and 40% of 2026 revenue respectively, while funding further AI infrastructure.
More broadly, social media ad revenue is expected to hit $640 billion by 2030, growing 12% annually, with its share of online advertising rising from 33% to 44%, according to Omdia.
However, the market remains highly concentrated, with six major platforms controlling around 90% of global social ad revenue. Analysts warn future growth will depend on balancing AI-driven gains with user experience to avoid weakening engagement.
