IPA appoints Ed Palmer as Director of Agency Value

The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, IPA, has appointed Ed Palmer as Director of Agency Value, tasking him with leading work to help agencies better define and strengthen their commercial value. Palmer succeeds Joyce Kelso, who is retiring from the role.

He will start on 2 February and take responsibility for the IPA’s Commercial Pillar, a core strand of the organization’s support for member agencies. The appointment comes as agencies face increasing pressure to review commercial models, strengthen client relationships and demonstrate effectiveness in a challenging trading environment.

Strengthening commercial leadership

In his role, Ed Palmer will convene senior leaders from IPA member agencies to shape best practice across commercial leadership, new business, client relationships, finance and sustainability. The focus will be on ensuring that guidance and initiatives are practical and aligned with the IPA’s wider mission to support agencies.

Palmer brings nearly three decades of agency experience. He spent ten years as Managing Director of independent creative agency St Luke’s, overseeing a period of sustained performance and cultural development. Earlier in his career, he held senior positions at Leo Burnett, TBWA and M&C Saatchi, including Business Director, Head of Account Management and Managing Partner.

Long-standing IPA involvement

Alongside his agency leadership roles, Palmer has been closely involved with the IPA. He previously co-chaired the Client Relationship Group and supported St Luke’s in achieving CPD Platinum accreditation for four consecutive years, reflecting a long-term commitment to professional development and industry standards.

Ed Palmer: “The IPA is a treasure trove of content, training, tools, awards, advice and thought leadership. Like the Sgt. Pepper album cover, the more you look into it, the more gems you uncover. I’ve been lucky enough to benefit from its resources throughout my entire career, and I’ve absolutely loved supporting its work from the agency side. St Luke’s is an incredible agency that will always hold a special place in my heart, but the chance to do it on a full-time basis was an opportunity too good to miss.”

Supporting agencies in a tough market

Paul Bainsfair, Director General, IPA:“We are delighted to welcome Ed to the IPA. He brings an exceptional depth of senior agency experience, a strong track record in commercial leadership, and a long-standing commitment to the IPA and its mission. His expertise will be invaluable for our agencies as they continue to navigate a tough trading environment.”
