[eMarketer] China’s internet population to reach 1 billion by 2022

China’s internet users are set to reach one billion by the end of 2022 according to the latest projections by eMarketer as the country’s number of online population reached 8.6 per cent in 2020 buoyed by the pandemic, increase usage among people in the old age bracket and improved rural internet access.

eMarketer further projects that this year there will be 983.7 million internet users,  the fastest the online population has grown since 2012. And while that growth is slow to 3.6 per cent this year, it will still translate to about 70.4 per cent of the population being internet users, an unprecedented figure in the country. Compare this figure with for example India where an estimate 45 per cent of the population will be internet users this year.

Due to its huge population, China’s internet population has remained the largest globally since the beginning of 2000 but took a dip in the lead up to 2020 due to the large size of the base. The remarkable numbers in 2020 have boosted the online population numbers.
