Droga5 reshapes Brazilian flag for ocean protection
Droga5 São Paulo has launched the second phase of its Lifeless Flag campaign for SOS Oceano, highlighting the interdependence of Brazil’s oceans and forests. The initiative uses art and design to reinforce the need for expanded marine protected areas.
The first phase, unveiled at Rio Ocean Week in October 2025, removed the blue and green from the Brazilian flag to symbolise that without healthy oceans, terrestrial life cannot thrive. The second phase translates this concept into six screen-printed artworks created with natural mineral pigments, in collaboration with Black Madre Studio and Joules & Joules Laboratory.
Artworks fuse marine and terrestrial ecosystems
Each print pairs Brazilian marine and land flora and fauna, from the Amazon Rainforest to the Humpback Whale, while retaining the yellow diamond from the flag as a focal point. The pieces celebrate the connection between ocean and land ecosystems, visually representing the campaign’s environmental message.
Diego Limberti, Chief Design Officer, Droga5 São Paulo: "The beginning of this project showed that design can condense a complex environmental truth into a single, felt symbol. In this phase, the elements of the flag remain part of the campaign's visual process, but they are now reinterpreted to emphasize the animals that live in marine parks and their relationship with the forest. One biome depends on the other, and this is highlighted by the colors of Brazil's greatest symbol."
Natural pigments and screen printing reinforce message
Screen printing was chosen for its ability to achieve precise color layering, creating a tactile, artisanal finish aligned with the campaign’s environmental ethos. Pigments were developed with Joules & Joules Laboratory to achieve natural hues and transparency without synthetic solvents.
André Maciel, Creative Director: "The project is rooted in color theory. When we say 'without blue there is no green,' we're working with the fundamental logic of primary and secondary colors: blue and yellow create green."
Campaign integrates impact-focused methodology
The initiative was developed with WALK, Droga5’s platform for combining cultural insight with measurable social impact. Proprietary tools like Index, Prisma, and the Weighted Impact KPI allow campaigns to turn environmental and social tensions into strategic, creative, and measurable communication solutions.
