DEPT, Dutch bank ABN AMRO launch teen-focused neobank
ABN AMRO, the Netherlands’ third-largest bank, has launched BUUT, a digital banking platform designed for teenagers and their parents. Developed by the creators of Tikkie in partnership with DEPT, BUUT provides young users with tools to manage their money through simple, visual features such as digital “jars” for payments and savings.
The project responds to the challenge faced by traditional banks in attracting younger, digitally native audiences while maintaining trust and oversight. BUUT positions itself as more than a junior account by offering a dedicated neobank experience tailored to the needs of both teens and parents.
BUUT was built from the ground up based on research and insights gathered from parents and teenagers. DEPT collaborated with ABN AMRO and Tikkie to define the proposition, customer journey and full user experience.
Sanne van Kuijk, head of growth, BUUT: "BUUT is more than a banking app—it’s a tool for learning. It gives teenagers the freedom to explore money in a safe and structured way, helping them understand budgeting, saving, and spending while making financial decisions. At the same time, it reassures parents that they can guide and support their children without compromising oversight."
The development process involved interviews, surveys, concept tests and usability sessions to ensure the app was desirable and practical for its audience. DEPT was responsible for the complete digital experience of the BUUT app, covering UX, visual and motion design.
Lucas Nutbey, SVP strategy EMEA, DEPT: "What made this project special was the collaboration with the whole Tikkie and ABN AMRO team—built on trust, openness, and the sense that we were working together as one unit. That spirit of collaboration is what allowed BUUT to become more than just a banking app."
To support the launch, DEPT also created a modular website featuring articles, videos and interactive elements, extending BUUT’s visual identity across multiple touchpoints.
The platform aims to help teenagers gain financial independence while giving parents the confidence to guide and monitor their children’s money management.
