Bauer and Solihull Council debut smart wayfinding

The touchscreen unit is the first of its kind in Solihull and the second of its kind in the UK

An interactive wayfinding unit has been installed at the entrance to Solihull Station, giving residents and visitors access to information about local amenities, events, transport and services. The project is a partnership between Bauer Media Outdoor UK and Solihull Council.

The touchscreen unit is the first of its kind in Solihull and the second of its kind in the UK. It features a detailed borough map alongside information on events, entertainment venues, restaurants and visitor attractions.

Interactive unit provides local information

The installation also offers practical information including weather updates, transport links, shopping destinations and council services. It is designed to help people arriving at the station navigate the borough and find relevant information quickly.

Solihull Council worked with Bauer Media Outdoor UK to identify the location for the unit. Bauer is covering the installation costs and will provide the council with a percentage of advertising revenue generated through the unit.

Bauer manages advertising-funded infrastructure

Bauer Media Outdoor UK will also oversee ongoing maintenance. Remote monitoring technology and regular in-person inspections will be used to help keep the unit operational.

Will Ramage, Managing Director, Bauer Media Outdoor UK: “We’re focused on creating public spaces that are more connected, informative and valuable for the communities they serve. This new wayfinding unit at Solihull Station is a great example of how ad-funded infrastructure can support local authorities, residents, visitors and businesses alike. By placing useful, real-time local information at a key arrival point, we’re helping people navigate Solihull more easily while also opening new opportunities to promote the borough’s events, attractions and services.”

Council highlights access to local information

Councillor Wazma Qais, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Communities, Solihull Council: "I’m delighted to unveil Solihull’s first wayfinding and Local Information Unit, which our visitor economy team, Visit Solihull, have worked closely with Bauer Media to bring to life

“It’s important that information about our borough is as accessible as possible. This unit will be a fantastic asset for visitors, residents and local businesses, helping everyone arriving at Solihull Station easily find what they need, from parks and transport links to local events, attractions and places to eat.

"Solihull Station is already a key gateway to our town centre, which remains one of the strongest performing in the country. This new wayfinding unit, which is only the second of its kind in the country, is a valuable addition that will help as we meet growing passenger demand over the coming decade and support our ambitions for future growth."

The installation creates a central source of local information at one of Solihull’s busiest transport hubs, while providing opportunities for local businesses, services and visitor destinations to reach people arriving in the borough.
