Americans lead in global ChatGPT usage
ChatGPT remains the most widely used AI tool worldwide, even as OpenAI phases out its video-generation app, Sora. New analysis reveals where users are concentrated globally and how engagement differs across regions and demographics.
Data compiled by BestBrokers highlights that Americans account for the largest share of ChatGPT users, representing 17.1 percent of the total—roughly 205.2 million visitors. India follows with 16.5 percent, or 198 million users. Brazil (5.8 percent / 69.6 million) and Canada (5.4 percent / 64.8 million) complete the top four markets. While ChatGPT captures 60.4 percent of the generative AI chatbot market, usage patterns vary widely.
User Concentration Across Regions
Estimates suggest Canadian users engage with ChatGPT more frequently than in other countries. Based on 1.17 trillion prompts processed annually, Canadians generate approximately 63.3 billion prompts each year, averaging 130 messages per citizen. This indicates that while the U.S. leads in total users, Canada demonstrates the highest intensity of engagement.
Europe also shows steady adoption, with France (51.6 million), Spain (44.4 million), and the UK (32.4 million) reporting substantial user bases. Mid-sized markets such as the Netherlands and South Korea reflect contrasting adoption rates relative to population. In the Netherlands, 72 percent of residents use ChatGPT, sending an average of 58.3 queries per month, while South Korea’s 25.6 percent adoption indicates more limited penetration despite similar absolute numbers.

Emerging Markets and Latin America
Latin America is becoming a key growth region. Brazil and Mexico together account for over 110 million users, with Brazil ranking third globally, roughly one in every three citizens using ChatGPT. This suggests rapid digital adoption and a growing reliance on AI in daily tasks across the region.
Shifts in Usage Patterns
OpenAI’s February Signals data revealed that users increasingly prefer ChatGPT for personal tasks rather than work-related activities.
Alan Goldberg, BestBrokers.com: "While millions have integrated ChatGPT and other AI tools into daily workflows, usage is shifting: people rely more on rival AI apps for professional tasks and use ChatGPT mainly for personal purposes."
The discontinuation of Sora may signal OpenAI’s focus on enterprise coding tools and a combined AI platform incorporating ChatGPT, Codex, and Atlas. This strategic pivot is likely aligned with the company’s preparation for an upcoming IPO.
Environmental Impact
BestBrokers’ report also estimates the global energy footprint of ChatGPT, processing 3.2 billion queries daily. The full report includes detailed methodology, calculations, and access to underlying data.
