Rural Filipinos reshape media habits, Nielsen report

The latest Nielsen Consumer & Media View (CMV) Rural Survey reveals how rural Filipinos—who make up 46 percent of the population—are shaping the country’s evolving media landscape. The study highlights rapid growth in digital connectivity outside major cities, alongside continued reliance on traditional media.

According to Nielsen, 91 percent of rural Filipinos now own a smartphone and 87 percent have internet access, helping to narrow the gap between rural and urban consumers. This connectivity is transforming how audiences in remote areas access information and entertainment.

Digital access grows while radio remains strong

Despite the spread of mobile and internet access, traditional media continues to play a vital role in rural communities. AM radio remains more widely listened to outside cities, providing advertisers with an effective way to reach engaged local audiences. Asian television dramas also enjoy stronger appeal among rural viewers compared with urban counterparts.

Lifestyle and consumption habits differ too: powdered juice and coffee are significantly more popular among rural Filipinos than among city residents. These distinctions underline the importance of localized marketing and product strategies for brands seeking growth in regional areas.

Smartphone use reshapes rural media engagement

Winlove Chavez, Country Lead, Nielsen Agencies and Advertisers, Philippines: “Nielsen CMV’s Rural Survey data allows brands and marketers to truly understand how rural Filipinos are consuming media and what platforms they’re engaging with regularly. It can rapidly drive market share and growth, expand presence in rural areas, track product consumption, and enable localised activations. The latest Q3 data from North, Central and South Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao represents 38.4 million Filipinos. These insights are critical for any advertiser looking to meaningfully connect with audiences outside urban areas.”

Nielsen urges brands to connect beyond cities

Adrienne Wong, Managing Director, Asia, Nielsen: “Understanding what drives rural audiences is essential. This data gives businesses the tools and insights they need to maximise success. As rural markets become more connected, they’re becoming far more important to advertisers, making this kind of data a must-have.”

The CMV Rural Survey is described as the most comprehensive national study of rural audiences in the Philippines. Conducted through 2,000 face-to-face interviews across North, Central and South Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, the research represents a population of 38.4 million people aged ten and over. The findings aim to help brands identify growth opportunities, monitor product use, and design effective, locally relevant campaigns.
