NRC appoints Patricia Veldhuis as editor-in-chief

The NRC editorial staff has nominated Patricia Veldhuis to the management of Mediahuis NRC, which formally appoints the editor-in-chief.

Veldhuis will also become statutory director of Mediahuis NRC. The selection of a new editor-in-chief at NRC is done by the editorial board.

Veldhuis has worked for NRC since 2008 and was, among other things, editor of the then morning newspaper and of the Economics editorial team.

She was chief of the editorial staff of Binnenland and Weekend for seven years. The weekend newspaper was restyled under her leadership. She also transformed the then magazine at NRC into a journalistic monthly magazine.

From 2019 to 2023, Veldhuis was education editor. In her final year she stood in front of the classroom herself, to understand why there is such a shortage of teachers. This project resulted in a two-part podcast and the book Who wants to be in the classroom? What goes wrong in education and how it can be improved , published in 2023 by Nijgh & Van Ditmar.

In September last year, Veldhuis replaced then editor-in-chief René Moerland. Since Moerland announced his departure on October 31, 2023, she has been editor-in-chief/interim director. Moerland has led NRC since 2019.

Veldhuis studied economic and social history at Radboud University Nijmegen. Before coming to NRC, she was editor and editor-in-chief of the Algemeen Nijmeegs Studentenblad , freelancer at Omroep Gelderland, editor at KUnieuws (the then weekly magazine of Radboud University), co-creator of and editor at the weekly magazine Carp and editor-in-chief of Vox , the independent magazine. from Radboud University.

Patricia Veldhuis: "I think it is a great honor to be able to lead NRC in the coming years and I am very much looking forward to it. These will be exciting times, with even faster digitalization, AI and fake news, but I have every confidence in the power of our journalism. It is and remains in-depth, distinctive and reliable. That is something people are willing to pay for, especially in turbulent times.”

Dominic Stas, CEO, Mediahuis NRC: "We as news media are facing turbulent times. With Patricia as editor-in-chief, I have full confidence that NRC will continue to be a leading journalist in the coming years. As co-director, her fresh and well-founded insights will help make the right choices to prepare our company for a successful digital future.”

Floor Boon, chairman of the editorial board, Mediahuis NRC: "We had the luxury of being able to choose from several top candidates, and Patricia was the very best for us. With her as editor-in-chief, we have full confidence in the future of NRC.”
