Digital video pushes TV industry past $1tn by 2030

Global television and online video revenues are set to surpass $1 trillion by 2030, driven largely by digital advertising growth, according to data presented by Maria Rua Aguete of Omdia at the FED Show in Madrid.

Total revenues are projected to increase from $775 billion in 2025 to $1.03 trillion in 2030, reflecting a shift in the media and entertainment sector as digital formats take a leading role, particularly in advertising.

Online advertising drives expansion

Online video advertising is expected to be the primary contributor to this growth, rising from $309 billion in 2025 to $540 billion by 2030. Its share of total revenues will increase from 40 percent to 53 percent, underscoring the growing importance of digital channels.

Social video platforms including Meta, TikTok and YouTube are forecast to generate around $400 billion in streaming advertising revenues by 2030. These platforms benefit from mobile-first consumption, short-form video formats and algorithm-driven content discovery, which support both user engagement and monetisation.

Subscription growth slows as market matures

Online video subscription and transaction revenues are also expected to grow, reaching $216 billion by 2030 from $174 billion in 2025. However, this segment is entering a more mature phase, with slower expansion compared to advertising-led models.

Traditional television declines

Traditional television segments continue to lose ground. Linear TV advertising revenues are forecast to fall from $123 billion in 2025 to $113 billion in 2030, with their share declining from 16 percent to 11 percent.

Pay TV revenues, including subscriptions and transactions, are also projected to decrease from $169 billion to $159 billion, reflecting ongoing cord-cutting and audience migration toward digital platforms.

Maria Rua Aguete, Head of Media & Entertainment, Omdia: "The industry is undergoing a profound transformation. Social video advertising is becoming the dominant force, reshaping how content is consumed and monetized. Meanwhile, traditional models such as linear TV and pay TV are in structural decline."

Omdia’s analysis indicates that as the industry approaches the $1 trillion threshold, digital platforms—particularly those driven by advertising—are expected to play a central role in shaping future revenue streams.
