Dentsu rethinks media targeting with generative audiences
Dentsu has launched Generative Audiences, an AI-powered audience intelligence and activation capability designed to support how brands plan and buy media in an increasingly algorithm-driven environment.
The UK is the first market to deploy the capability, marking the start of a wider rollout.
The solution is positioned as a response to the limitations of existing audience targeting approaches. Identity-based models often struggle to scale, while signal-only approaches can lack accuracy. Generative Audiences combines people-based data with AI-driven signals to create statistical simulations of audience groups, such as UK homeowners, younger adults or early technology adopters.
Rethinking audience insight and targeting
Generative Audiences is designed to provide scalable audiences while reducing reliance on personal data. By blending deterministic data with AI-derived signals, the capability aims to support privacy-conscious planning without sacrificing relevance or reach.
The process begins with insight generation. Rather than relying on siloed datasets or manual data fusion, the system integrates with existing data sources to synthesise static and dynamic inputs relevant to each client and market. This allows practitioners to build synthetic personas that can be explored to better understand motivations and behaviours.
From insight to activation
The use of synthetic personas enables teams to test scenarios and questions in real time, such as how an audience might respond to a creative message or react to a recent news event. This approach is intended to reduce the need for additional research while broadening the perspective beyond a single dataset.
Insights then feed directly into activation. Marketers can move beyond conventional targeting methods, including ID matching or third-party signal solutions, by incorporating contextual factors such as mood, location and shifting needs across the funnel. This approach is designed to support more relevant media placements and clearer publisher-level understanding.
Early results and contextual precision
Dentsu reports that early trials in the UK delivered increases beyond existing audience reach, including up to 60 percent growth in meaningful reach and 33 percent greater precision when contextual relevance was added.
Ben Gott, Data & Technology President, dentsu UK&I: “Generative Audiences gives our clients growth intelligence that allows them to ask questions, anticipate what’s next and activate with precision. This is not another targeting tool, but an approach that blends human insight with AI to help brands respond to cultural and consumer change.”
Technology foundations and governance
According to dentsu, many generative audience solutions rely directly on large language models without sufficient calibration to real-world behaviour. Generative Audiences is positioned as an alternative that prioritises signals with practical relevance and context.
Shirli Zelcer, Chief Data & Technology Officer: “We are not chasing signals; we are activating the ones that matter and understanding the world around us. This is about designing AI-fuelled technology that works across the marketing ecosystem, turning intelligence into intention and relevance into results.”
Generative Audiences is powered by dentsu.AI and integrates with dentsu.Connect, allowing interoperability with clients’ existing data and technology. The company states that the solution is designed to operate in both data-rich and low-data markets while aligning with UK and global privacy requirements.
Global rollout plans
The UK deployment represents the first phase of a broader international rollout. Dentsu has indicated that further enhancements are planned as the capability expands into additional markets.
Will Swayne, Global and Americas Media CEO: “We are embedding intelligence across our offer to help brands innovate and grow. By combining technology with human insight, we are building capabilities that deliver impact while maintaining the media standards our clients expect.”
