Wikipedia launches docuseries spotlighting volunteer editors
Amid growing concerns about misinformation and eroding trust online, Wikipedia has been called “the last best place on the internet” — a digital space where people can debate, collaborate, and ultimately agree on the facts. To mark its 25th anniversary, the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that operates Wikipedia, has launched a global campaign celebrating a quarter-century of human-powered knowledge.
Developed with purpose-led creative agency Kin, the campaign features a first-of-its-kind video docuseries offering a behind-the-scenes look at Wikipedia’s volunteer editors.
The series spotlights eight editors from around the world, including a Californian documenting hurricanes for two decades, an Indian doctor sharing critical COVID-19 updates, a Tokyo librarian making knowledge accessible in Japanese, and a photographer from New Haven capturing authentic Black culture. Their stories highlight that, even in the AI era, knowledge remains fundamentally human.
Ahead of the anniversary, Kin and Wikipedia released a 90-second brand anthem on YouTube, built entirely from visual assets from Wikimedia Commons. Featuring over 700 global images and videos, the film celebrates collaboration, consensus, and the collective effort behind Wikipedia’s open knowledge mission. Directed by Adrian Yu of Excetera, it emphasizes authenticity, inclusivity, and the global network of contributors across languages and generations.
Sophie Ozoux, co-founder, Kin: “In a world shaped by algorithms, misinformation, and endless noise, Wikipedia reminds us of the joy of learning, the power of curiosity, and the beauty of knowledge built by people, for people.”
Kwame Taylor-Hayford, co-founder, Kin: “This campaign is our love letter to that human network — the quiet, collective brilliance behind the world’s largest collaborative project.”
Zack McCune, Director of Global Brand, Wikimedia Foundation: “Wikipedia is one of the world's best examples of human potential to create something meaningful through collaboration. This campaign embodies that spirit, highlighting the people who make this global knowledge resource possible.”
As part of the yearlong celebration, the Foundation has also launched a “25 Years of Wikipedia” time capsule and an interactive quiz, alongside social media initiatives, including a digital birthday card designed to become the longest ever.
The campaign underscores Wikipedia’s mission to make trustworthy knowledge freely accessible, while celebrating the volunteers who keep the platform alive and growing.
