Volkswagen pays tribute to Golf GTI at 50
The creative highlights design elements that have remained associated with the GTI throughout its history
Bernbach has launched a campaign for Volkswagen UK celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Golf GTI, highlighting the model's place in British motoring culture and the generations of drivers who have owned the performance hatchback.
The campaign centers on a 60-second film, 50 Years of Pure Passion, which traces the GTI's history from the launch of the original Mk1 in 1976 through to the Golf GTI Edition 50. It will run across cinema, television, video-on-demand and social media in the UK until October.
Campaign traces five decades of GTI history
Directed by Billy Boyd Cape through Academy Films, the film follows the changing relationship between drivers and the GTI over five decades, beginning with a family receiving a Mk1 GTI in the 1970s and ending with the latest anniversary model. It also includes a glimpse of the forthcoming ID. Polo GTI.
The creative highlights design elements that have remained associated with the GTI throughout its history, including the badge, alloy wheels, steering wheel and gear lever, alongside period details such as cassette and CD players. The visual style also changes to reflect each era, moving from home movie footage and camcorder aesthetics to gaming and smartphone-style content.
Sarah Cox-Thornley, Head of Marketing, Volkswagen UK: "People all over the world have memories that are intertwined with GTI cars. We wanted to celebrate that and give people an enjoyable trip down memory lane. Celebrating 50 years of pure passion has been an absolute joy for the team, replicating real customer stories and featuring some of our fans' own content is a true honour. Having such equity in these 3 letters - G.T.I - is something we had to celebrate in this milestone year."
Film celebrates GTI community
The campaign also features GTI owners and enthusiasts of different ages, including families, collectors and fans, illustrating the model's place in everyday life and popular culture.
Sam Lecoeur, Chief Client Officer at Bernbach: "For 50 years, the GTI has captured the hearts of drivers, so it was a real joy, alongside the brilliant team at Volkswagen, to celebrate the iconic role it has played in UK culture over generations."
The Golf GTI was developed by a small team at Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg before entering production in 1976. Volkswagen said more than 2.5 million GTIs have been sold globally, while the model continues to attract large online communities and enthusiast events.
