Type Directors Club announces first Type-High winners
The inaugural Type-High programme introduces Gold, Silver and Bronze awards alongside the longstanding TDC Certificate of Merit
The Type Directors Club (TDC) has announced the first recipients of its Type-High awards as part of the TDC72 competition, recognising excellence in typography, lettering and communication design. The winners were revealed during an awards ceremony and exhibition at The Lighthouse in Brooklyn.
The inaugural Type-High programme introduces Gold, Silver and Bronze awards alongside the longstanding TDC Certificate of Merit. The awards were named and designed by Graham Clifford, a longtime TDC collaborator, life member and Chairman Emeritus.
Winners recognised across three disciplines
This year's competition awarded 13 Gold, 26 Silver, 28 Bronze and 92 Certificates of Merit across the three disciplines of Communication Design, Lettering and Type Design.
Best of Discipline winners were SMLXL New York, in collaboration with Mallandrich Barcelona, for Spatial Festival 2025 in Communication Design; Neighbour Co. Hong Kong SAR China for Tattour 2025 Identity in Lettering; and Adobe Tokyo for Momochidori Variable Font, designed by Ryoko Nishizuka and Frank Grießhammer, in Type Design.
Gold awards span typography and branding
Among the 13 Gold winners were Adobe Tokyo for Momochidori Variable Font; Base Design New York for 12 Matcha; Neighbour Co. Hong Kong SAR China for Tattour 2025 Identity; Studio Dumbar/DEPT Rotterdam, together with OpenAI Creative Studio San Francisco, for two entries created for OpenAI DevDay 2025; SMLXL New York with Mallandrich Barcelona for Spatial Festival 2025; Omnicom Chicago, Omnicom Production Chicago and Pes Motion Studio Chicago for Caption with Intention; and The New York Times Magazine for the cover of Inside the Collapse of the F.D.A.
Other Gold recipients included Daniel Frumhoff Design, Mălin Neamțu, Shira Inbar with collaborators Ahmed Klink and Tom Van der Borght, Tarek Atrissi Design, and Underware.
Studio Dumbar/DEPT and SMLXL lead overall results
Studio Dumbar/DEPT Rotterdam recorded the highest number of awards, receiving two Golds, two Silvers and one Certificate of Merit. SMLXL New York followed with one Gold, two Silvers, one Bronze and one Certificate of Merit.
Overall, winners represented 40 countries and regions. The United States received the highest number of awards with 93, followed by Mainland China with 23. The Netherlands and Spain each received nine awards, while the United Kingdom received seven.
Winning work will be published in The World's Best Typography® annual in September and featured in a touring exhibition visiting museums, schools and design organisations internationally. Winners also earn points in The One Club for Creativity's Global Creative Rankings.
