Sweden unveils travel agency for introverts

The launch follows research showing that 67 percent of travelers prefer destinations where social interaction feels optional.

Sweden is launching The Introvert Travel Agency, a travel initiative aimed at people seeking quieter holidays with less social pressure and greater freedom to explore independently.

A YouGov survey found that 41 percent of respondents identify as introverts, while 45 percent describe themselves as a combination of introvert and extrovert. Only 14 percent identify as extroverts. The research also found that 53 percent would pay more for greater peace, privacy or fewer crowds, while nearly half sometimes feel they need a vacation from their vacation to recover after travelling.

Sweden targets demand for quieter travel

Mattias Lundberg, licensed psychologist and Associate Professor of Psychology at Umeå University: "For introverts, recharging is often less about being alone and more about having control over when and how we interact with others. Environments with less social pressure, more personal space and the possibility to withdraw can make it easier to preserve and regain energy. Sweden naturally offers many of these qualities, which makes it particularly well suited to travelers who want to experience a destination on their own terms."

The initiative highlights aspects of Swedish culture and geography that can support independent travel. Having coffee alone is commonplace, while personal space is generally respected. Sweden’s low population density and the right of public access, allemansrätten, also allow visitors to explore nature independently.

Introvert Travel Agency brings Swedish travel to Europe

Susanne Andersson, CEO, Visit Sweden: "Many travelers are looking for something surprisingly simple: the freedom to decide when they want company and when they don't. Sweden has always offered that kind of space, in our nature, our cities and our social culture. The Introvert Travel Agency makes it easier to experience Sweden in your own way. Here, being social is an option, not an obligation."

The Introvert Travel Agency is available online and will also launch as a pop-up experience. The activation is designed to showcase Sweden’s nature, space and social culture to visitors interested in quieter travel.

Sweden pop-up visits Berlin, Paris and London

The pop-up will visit three European cities in October:

  • Berlin: 14–17 October
  • Paris: 21–24 October
  • London: 28–31 October

The initiative positions Sweden as a destination for travelers who want greater control over their level of social interaction while exploring cities and natural environments at their own pace.
