O2 campaign links EU roaming with football travel

O2 and its creative agency VCCP have launched a campaign highlighting the mobile network’s inclusive EU roaming offering, using football fandom and summer travel as the backdrop for a nationwide advertising push.

The campaign, Find the beautiful game in beautiful places, promotes O2’s position as the only major UK network offering all customers up to 25GB of EU roaming at no extra cost, while linking the benefit to consumers seeking places to watch football during their holidays across Europe.

Football and travel at the centre of campaign

Running under O2’s Essential for Living brand platform, the campaign centres on a 40-second film that follows two teenage siblings on holiday as they search for a place to watch a major international football tournament.

Directed by Miles Jay through SMUGGLER and produced in collaboration with VCCP’s content studio Girl&Bear, the film shows the pair navigating unfamiliar streets using their mobile phones before discovering a local venue screening the match. The campaign is soundtracked by Fred Again and Jamie T’s Lights Burn Dimmer and features the long-running voice of O2 campaigns, Sean Bean.

VCCP highlights roaming proposition

The campaign aims to demonstrate how mobile data roaming has become an important travel tool, helping consumers navigate destinations, discover local experiences and stay connected while abroad.

By focusing on football viewing habits during the summer travel season, VCCP places O2’s roaming proposition at the centre of a broader cultural moment.

David Masterman, Executive Creative Director, VCCP: "O2 is the only major UK network that doesn’t charge their customers extra for EU roaming. This summer, for many travellers, that’s going to mean just one thing; finding the game. Whether it’s finding a football-loving speakeasy, or streaming the match on the beach. We’ve created a proper showcase for how data roaming has evolved from a simple utility into an essential tool."

Outdoor activity extends campaign

The campaign is supported by out-of-home advertising featuring holidaymakers watching football on their phones in European destinations. The creative uses imagery photographed by Tom Cockram, with holiday scenes designed to echo the circular O motif in the O2 logo.

The outdoor executions will appear in high-footfall locations across the UK, including sites near airports, alongside activity across television, cinema, online video, social media, radio, partnerships, activation and public relations.

Customer offers support summer travel

Alongside the advertising campaign, O2 is introducing travel-related offers for customers. These include three months of free Super Duolingo and discounted access to Voi e-bikes and scooters, intended to help travellers navigate destinations and discover local attractions.

Rachel Swift, Director of Brand and Advertising, Virgin Media O2: "Holidays are no longer about tourist experiences, instead, holidaymakers want to find authentic local culture and hidden gems to explore. As the only major UK network offering all of our customers inclusive EU roaming at no extra cost, we’re providing the ultimate travel essential for spontaneous discovery and adventure. By tapping into the cultural power of the football this summer, this campaign beautifully captures the human thrill of the unknown and brings our ‘Essential for Living’ proposition to life."
