Mr. Big Banker puts hidden fees in the spotlight

Credit Union of Colorado has launched a campaign developed by independent creative and design agency Grit that challenges perceptions of traditional banking by personifying some of the industry's most criticised practices through a fictional character called Mr. Big Banker.

Running across digital and social channels, the campaign uses humour and satire to highlight issues such as hidden fees, promotional interest rates and customer dissatisfaction with large financial institutions.

Campaign targets frustrations with traditional banks

The creative approach is built on the insight that many consumers are already dissatisfied with their banks but often stop short of switching providers due to the perceived inconvenience involved.

Rather than focusing on the benefits of credit unions, the campaign shines a spotlight on the practices consumers frequently associate with large banks.

At the centre of the work is Mr. Big Banker, a fictional executive who openly celebrates the tactics and policies that often frustrate customers.

Fictional banker embraces industry stereotypes

Set in executive offices and boardrooms, the campaign presents the character as a confident spokesperson for hidden fees, introductory offers and complex banking practices.

By having the character openly acknowledge these behaviours, the campaign uses irony to contrast traditional banking with the member-owned credit union model.

The creative positions Mr. Big Banker as the embodiment of the financial sector's perceived shortcomings, encouraging audiences to reconsider their relationship with conventional banking providers.

Humour drives campaign message

Grit uses a deliberately exaggerated tone throughout the campaign, allowing the fictional banker to discuss controversial banking practices with enthusiasm rather than discretion.

The approach aims to make familiar frustrations more visible while creating an entertaining narrative that stands out in financial services advertising.

Digital and social rollout underway

The campaign is currently running across digital and social media platforms, extending Credit Union of Colorado's efforts to differentiate itself from larger banking competitors.

By focusing on industry perceptions rather than product features, the campaign seeks to position the credit union as an alternative for consumers dissatisfied with traditional banking experiences.
