[Marketing Week] Bob Koigi: Key lessons from Cannes Lions 2026

This year's festival marked a shift from celebrating advertising spectacle to rewarding commercial effectiveness, cultural relevance and scalable innovation

As the curtains fall on the 2026 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, one message is unmistakable: creativity is no longer judged by attention alone, but by its ability to deliver business growth, solve real-world problems and create measurable impact.

This year's festival marked a shift from celebrating advertising spectacle to rewarding commercial effectiveness, cultural relevance and scalable innovation. The winning work reflected an industry where creativity is increasingly expected to drive tangible business outcomes.

The standout campaigns proved that simple ideas can deliver transformational results. Greece secured its first-ever Cannes Lions Grand Prix with The Wedding Rice, turning discarded rice into a new revenue stream for farmers. AXA France's Three Words showed how a minor change to insurance contracts could create significant social impact while strengthening the brand.

Artificial intelligence remained central to conversations, but its role evolved from disruption to enablement. adidas' Supernova Adaptive running shoe demonstrated how AI and inclusive design can improve accessibility, while Wisła Kraków's AI-powered Lucky Fan Index illustrated how technology can strengthen customer loyalty and unlock new commercial opportunities.

The creator economy also came of age, with creators positioned as strategic partners shaping brands, products and communities rather than simply amplifying campaigns. Meanwhile, the launch of LIONS Sport alongside the FIFA World Cup reinforced sport's growing importance as a platform for cultural storytelling and brand engagement.

Cannes also tightened its judging standards, placing greater emphasis on verified effectiveness and measurable business results, reflecting the industry's growing demand for accountability.

The takeaway from Cannes Lions 2026 is clear: the most successful ideas are culturally relevant, commercially effective, technologically smart and socially meaningful. This was the year creativity stopped proving it could inspire and proved it could deliver.
