[Interview] Marta Blanco Sampedro, European Communications Director, GUT

Independent ad agency GUT recently appointed Marta Blanco Sampedro as Director of Communications in Europe, expanding the agency's strategic leadership across the continent. In this newly created role, Blanco Sampedro will lead all communications efforts for GUT's European offices, including GUT Amsterdam and GUT Madrid.

She talked to Marketing Report about her priorities and strategies, communication trends shaping European agencies and brands among other topics.

Marta, congratulations on your new role. What excites you most about joining the agency at this stage in its growth?

GUT is at a thrilling point—expanding globally with bold creative work and an equally bold culture. What excites me most is the opportunity to shape and amplify the agency’s voice in Europe as it scales, ensuring the same fearless spirit resonates across markets.

You’ve worked with some of the most iconic brands across entertainment, fashion, and tech. How have those experiences shaped your approach to communications and storytelling?

Working with culturally influential brands taught me that storytelling must always be rooted in honestly and relevance. It’s not just about saying something—it’s about saying something that moves people and makes a brand matter.

This is a newly created role for GUT in Europe. What are your top priorities as Director of Communications?

My first priority is to build a cohesive communication strategy that supports both creative impact and agency visibility. I also want to make sure everything we say and do is culturally relevant for each of our markets, so we can make a true impact.

How do you plan to elevate GUT’s brand reputation in Europe while maintaining its ‘fearless’ global identity?

By ensuring our European narrative stays true to GUT’s DNA—courage, transparency, and intuition —while tailoring the way we tell that story to resonate authentically with each market’s cultural context.

You’ll be working closely with teams in both Madrid and Amsterdam—what’s your strategy for uniting these offices under one communications vision while respecting local cultural nuances?

My approach is to co-create the vision with both offices, tapping into local insight and team’s input. It’s about building a shared culture of communication that allows for regional flavor without diluting our unified voice.

What do you see as the biggest challenges and opportunities in brand communications for agencies in Europe today?

The biggest challenge is relevance—breaking through the noise without losing authenticity. The opportunity lies in agility: being able to connect creative excellence with cultural relevance in real time.

Cultural insight is a key theme in your work—how do you ensure that a brand remains culturally relevant while still delivering business impact?

Cultural relevance and business impact aren’t mutually exclusive. When a brand truly understands the tension points in people’s lives, and communicates with purpose, it drives both emotional connection and business results.

As someone who has worked across multiple countries and cultures, what’s one leadership lesson you always carry with you?

Listen more than you speak. Every market, every team, every person has something unique to offer—and truly listening unlocks better ideas, better relationships, and better outcomes.

What are the key communication trends European agencies and brands should pay attention to right now?

Radical transparency, brand activism that goes beyond statements, and the shift from ‘campaign thinking’ to ongoing cultural participation.

How do you see the role of communications evolving within creative agencies in the next 3–5 years?

Comms will become more central to agency growth and reputation. It’s no longer just about earned media or PR—it’s about building narrative ecosystems that drive awareness, talent attraction, and long-term growth.
