Hot & Crispy meets sweet Teriyaki in KFC’s Tokyo-inspired love story
Japanese director Hiroshi Kikuchi has infused absurdist comedy and high-energy action into KFC’s latest fully integrated campaign, launching this week.
Created to celebrate the limited-edition Sweet Tokyo range, the campaign was filmed in the bustling streets of Tokyo’s Shinjuku district, centering on a playful love story between two star ingredients: Hot & Crispy KFC and Sweet Teriyaki sauce.
The campaign will roll out across TV, VOD, OLV, OOH, social media, activations, and audio channels.
Ogilvy creative director Shaun Branagan noted that with Hiroshi’s celebrated comedic work for brands like Suntory, Lazada, and SoftBank, the Sweet Tokyo campaign taps into Australians’ growing fascination with Japanese culture.
Shaun Branagan, creative director, Ogilvy: “The launch of Sweet Tokyo isn’t just about a new product — it’s a love story where sesame-coated chicken reunites with its old flame, sweet teriyaki sauce, much to the delight of sesame seed kids.”
“The fast-cut style is quintessentially Japanese and reflects the all-in approach KFC fans adore. Almost as much as chicken loves sauce.”
As part of the campaign, KFC is introducing a world-first vending machine offering free Sweet Tokyo Hot & Crispy, hidden at a secret location in Sydney’s Inner West. Social media clues will guide fans to the location for a chance to snag the exclusive treat.
