Heineken turns fandom into friendship with new global platform

Heineken has launched Fans Have More Friends, a global sponsorship platform that positions fandom as a practical way for people to connect with one another. The initiative brings together the brand’s partnerships across football, Formula 1 and music festivals, framing shared interests as a driver of social interaction in everyday settings.

The platform builds on Heineken’s long-standing focus on sociability and takes inspiration from the book Fans Have More Friends by Ben Valenta and David Sikorjak. By unifying multiple sponsorship properties under one idea, the brand aims to show how common passions can help people form connections at a time when many report feeling increasingly isolated.

Fandom as a social connector

Research commissioned by Heineken indicates that fandom plays a significant role in building relationships. Three-quarters of respondents said their fandom had helped them meet new people, while 59 percent reported that it had contributed to some of their closest friendships. The findings also suggest that shared experiences enhance enjoyment, with 75 percent saying watching sport with other fans improves the experience even when they support different teams.

Football emerged as a particularly strong social connector. Seventy-two percent of football fans said language does not present a barrier to making connections in a bar environment, highlighting the sport’s ability to bring together people from different backgrounds.

Testing the idea in real life

To explore whether fans would act on this sense of community, Heineken® partnered with Zac Alsop on a social experiment in New York. The project followed Joe, an Australian living in the city, who had no one to watch Liverpool play Qarabağ FK in the final group match of the UEFA Champions League.

Alsop distributed flyers across Manhattan featuring Joe’s photo and the invitation Have A Beer With Me, asking fellow fans to join him for the match on January 28. With no incentives attached, the call relied entirely on a shared sense of fandom.

From invitation to event

The response exceeded expectations, with hundreds of fans attending to support someone they had never met. The gathering quickly gained attention on social media, turning a simple meet-up into a larger communal moment.

Without Joe’s knowledge, Heineken transformed Central Park Tavern into a Champions League-style venue. The brand arranged for the UEFA Champions League trophy to be present and invited former footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger to serve beers behind the bar for those who attended.

Campaign rollout across markets

The New York experiment marks the start of a wider multi-channel rollout. The Fans Have More Friends television advertisement debuts this week in the United States, with plans to extend the campaign to 50 additional markets.

Directed by Frederik Bond and produced by Stink Films, the campaign film focuses on spontaneous interactions between fans at sporting events and music shows. It features Heineken® brand ambassadors including Max Verstappen, Virgil van Dijk and DJ Martin Garrix, shown connecting over shared interests rather than individual achievements.

Long-term platform plans

Heineken plans to extend the platform throughout 2026 with a range of assets tied to major moments in the football, Formula 1 and music calendars. These include the UEFA Champions League Final, the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final, Coachella and Grand Prix weekends worldwide.

Nabil Nasser, Global Head, Heineken: "Fandom has an incredible ability to bring people together. Across football, F1 and music, we see how shared passions help people meet, connect and feel part of something bigger. As a champion for social life, Heineken’s new platform – Fans Have More Friends – is about turning those shared moments into real connections wherever they are in the world."

Bruno Bertelli, Global CEO, LePub and CCO, LePub Worldwide: "Fans Have More Friends is built on a simple human truth: passion connects people faster than anything else. By turning fandom into a platform for real-world interaction, we wanted to create an ecosystem that doesn’t just celebrate fans, but actively brings them together, transforming shared passion into shared experiences."

David Sikorjak, co-author of Fans Have More Friends: "As someone with years of experience with the emotional ups and downs of the fan experience, I have always had a sense that being a fan is about being part of a community. But after years of studying fandom, I can say that the evidence behind fandom’s social benefits is conclusive. The bigger the fan, the more friends; the more friends, the happier, more fulfilled, and more satisfied one is. With this new platform from Heineken, I’m excited to see a brand lean into this insight by inspiring fans to come together and make the most of these social benefits."
