Govia Thameslink Railway launches campaign to boost leisure travel
Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has launched a new integrated campaign under its Every Stop is a Story brand platform, aiming to reposition its Southern and Thameslink services as enablers of leisure travel. The creative, developed by TMW (part of Accenture Song), will roll out across TV, VOD, out-of-home, social media, and digital channels, with media handled by T&P.
The campaign marks the latest chapter in GTR’s ongoing effort to shift consumer perceptions from commuter travel to leisure experiences across its network. It officially launched on 6 August with a Channel 4 TV spot.
Southern Railway’s ad, The day we saw a flying whale, follows a single father and his two children on a spontaneous day out. A surreal moment on their train journey leads to a visit to a kite festival, where the daughter’s imagination is sparked by giant aquatic kites. Her verdict on the trip: “That was actually fun.”
Meanwhile, Thameslink’s Plenty more fish spot focuses on a twenty-something man navigating a breakup. Encouraged by friends to take a daytrip, a mishap during paddleboarding leads to a chance encounter with an instructor – a twist of fate that offers hope and humour.
The work builds on GTR and TMW’s previous campaigns under the same brand umbrella, which have received Gold at the DMA Awards in both 2023 and 2024. The full-funnel strategy continues to show strong return on investment, supported by audience-centric planning and multi-channel execution.
Alex Briggs, head of marketing, Govia Thameslink Railway: “This campaign marks a new chapter in how we connect with leisure travellers. Every Stop is a Story captures the spirit of discovery that rail travel offers, and both TMW and T&P have been instrumental in helping us reimagine what our brands can mean to people beyond the daily commute. From creative to media, they’ve helped us show up in the moments that matter – whether that’s on a platform, a phone screen, or a family sofa – with stories that feel genuinely worth stopping for.”
Graeme Noble, chief creative officer, TMW, part of Accenture Song: “Every Stop is a Story shows the power of integrated storytelling at its best, blending emotional insight with humour across formats to bring GTR’s leisure travel vision to life. It’s been a joy building on our shared success with a client who understands the value of big, human ideas told in rich, audience-first ways.”
Sophie Fyles, chief client officer, T&P: “The latest campaign is our biggest yet for GTR but is a natural evolution of the audience-centric, full-funnel approach we’ve taken to their campaigns over the last year, which have consistently delivered positive ROI results. We’re excited to help GTR deliver the campaign and can’t wait to see it in action.”
