First-person film captures the runner’s inner noise
Voyager director Spencer MacDonald has directed Merrell’s campaign Nothing But The Run, created to support the launch of the Agility Peak 6 trail shoe. Spencer MacDonald also developed and pitched the creative concept, shaping the story from initial idea through to final execution, and appears on screen in a cameo role as an accountant.
Edited by Jonas Baumgartel with post-production by Leap Year, the film places viewers inside the mind of a runner in search of focus. Told entirely from a first-person perspective, the narrative opens amid everyday distractions: a therapist questioning emotions, an accountant running alongside with paperwork, laundry scattered across the trail and the hum of back-to-back Zoom calls. As the run continues, the noise recedes and the rhythm of the trail takes over, culminating in the line Nothing But The Run.
From chaos to clarity on the trail
The campaign visualizes the mental clutter that precedes physical focus. Each stride in the Agility Peak 6 marks a shift from distraction to concentration, as sound design and pacing move the runner towards a steadier, quieter state.
Spencer MacDonald: "I run most mornings. At the start, the thoughts from the previous day are so loud it almost feels like the people and images are running alongside me. I wish I could say they eventually fall away and I slip cleanly into a flow state, but I am not that disciplined of a runner. However, the idea of that transition from chaos to flow, something I hear about from much stronger runners than myself, has always interested me. This film was a chance to try to visualize that experience on the trail. I’m deeply grateful to Burke, Alex, Elizabeth, Tucker, and Kenny of the Merrell team for trusting me to bring this concept forward and for the thoughtful collaboration throughout. From the first conversations to the final touches on sound and color, it was one of the most harmonious shoots I’ve ever experienced. A rare gift with no ‘director’s cut’ needed."
Director-led concept shapes final execution
Spencer MacDonald’s involvement extended beyond directing duties. He proposed an alternative creative route that differed from the original brief while aligning with its core intent, and collaborated closely with Merrell’s creative team to refine the approach.
From production and sound design through to the final edit, the campaign builds a sensory portrayal of running, focusing on breath, movement and attention as external distractions fade. The result centres on the experience of the runner, positioning the Agility Peak 6 within a narrative of immersion and momentum.
