Cadbury revives Bournville with first major campaign in 50 years
Cadbury has unveiled a major new integrated brand campaign for its iconic dark chocolate brand, Bournville — the first in almost five decades. Created with global creative agency of record VCCP, the campaign introduces a bold new brand platform: “Made to be enjoyed, not endured.”
The campaign repositions Bournville as the antidote to bitter, hard-to-enjoy dark chocolate, championing its smooth, straightforward taste.
A Comic Take on Chocolate Elitism
At the heart of the campaign is a witty new film that pokes fun at dark chocolate snobbery. Two over-the-top connoisseurs compete in a game of escalating one-upmanship — boasting obscure cacao origins and absurd tasting notes — only to be upstaged by a Bournville fan quietly savoring a simple square of chocolate.
The film was directed by Harold Einstein of Outsider, with script development from BAFTA-winning comedy writer Simon Blackwell (Veep, Peep Show, The Thick of It). VCCP creatives Alice Goodrich, Lara Baxter, and Simon Connor collaborated on the script, ensuring a sharp, self-aware humor that flips category conventions on their head.
In addition to the 30-second spot, a 90-second extended cut was produced, featuring improvised moments captured on set.
The campaign spans multiple channels, including:
Out-of-home (OOH): Striking red-and-white visuals spotlight oversized chunks of glossy Bournville chocolate, blending heritage with a refreshed, vintage-modern look.
Broadcast & Digital: TV, radio, YouTube, video-on-demand and social media.
Owned Media: Organic social and eCRM activity led by Elvis.
Media planning and buying was managed by Publicis Media UK.

Chris Birch and Jonny Parker, CCOs, VCCP: “Bournville. The chocolate that just observes as all the others lose their minds chasing fads and fashions. A chocolate this legendary deserves famous work that shapes culture — and that’s exactly what this new platform will do.”
Simon Connor, Creative Director, VCCP: “Bournville is an OG dark chocolate from before tasting notes of tree bark and percentages that make your mouth cry. The team created something as enjoyably straightforward as Bournville itself — a campaign to be enjoyed, not endured.”
Elise Burditt, Senior Marketing Director, Mondelez: “With this campaign, we’re bringing Bournville back into the national conversation — but in a way that reflects the times. We’re excited for the nation to see Bournville in a whole new light.”
The new Bournville “Made to be enjoyed, not endured” campaign is live from today and will run nationwide across the UK.
