Burger King UK links Whopper to marathon recovery

Burger King UK has launched a campaign encouraging marathon runners to mark the end of their race with a Whopper, aligning the initiative with major running events across the UK.

Developed by BBH, the campaign forms the second phase of the brand’s Foodfillment platform, which focuses on moments of food satisfaction. An earlier execution under the platform featured new mothers choosing Burger King meals after giving birth.

Marathon runners inspire campaign creative

The latest campaign draws on the rise in running culture across the UK, where marathon participants increasingly share their post-race meals on social media, often opting for burgers. Burger King UK reflects this behaviour by showcasing real runners from past events enjoying meals after completing their races.

Photographer Sophie Green captured the visuals, focusing on candid portraits that highlight post-race experiences.

Campaign rollout focuses on race-day engagement

The campaign will run for one week across out-of-home placements, social media and print. It targets both runners and commuters travelling through central London during marathon events.

On 26 April, runners who present a medal can redeem a free Whopper at Burger King UK’s Strand or Leicester Square locations. Other central London restaurants will offer a buy-one-get-one-free promotion, excluding transport hubs.

Katie Evans, Chief Marketing Officer, Burger King UK: "At Burger King UK we seek out and celebrate genuine moments of true food satisfaction, and the people who experience them. We're rewarding the sheer mental strength and achievement of crossing a marathon finishing line, having run 26.2 miles, with a Whopper, the ultimate in post-marathon satisfaction."

The activation also includes branded pacemakers positioned after the race to guide participants toward a designated “Mile 27” point at the Leicester Square restaurant.

Running culture shapes creative direction

The agency positions the campaign within broader lifestyle habits, linking endurance sport with indulgent food choices after physical exertion.

Holly Fallows, Associate Creative Director, BBH: "The running movement has taken over culture, and this campaign highlights that you can be healthy and still enjoy a tasty Whopper at the end of a race. Refuelling with food that really hits the right spot is a human necessity."
